A year ago, I was going through a difficult time. I had moved to a new city for work, I didn’t know anyone, and I spent my weekends alone in my flat, watching series and feeling sorry for myself. One day, I saw a poster in a cafe: “Volunteers needed at the city animal shelter. No experience necessary.” I almost didn’t go. I’m so glad I did.
Bir yil oldin men qiyin davrni boshdan kechirayotgan edim. Ish uchun yangi shaharga ko‘chib kelgandim, hech kimni tanimasdim va dam olish kunlarimni kvartiramda yolg‘iz, seriallar ko‘rib, o‘zimga achinib o‘tkazardim. Bir kuni kafeda e’lon ko‘rdim: “Shahar hayvonlar boshpanasiga ko‘ngillilar kerak. Tajriba talab qilinmaydi.” Men deyarli bormay qolayozdim. Borganimdan juda xursandman.
The shelter is on the edge of the city, in an old farm building. It looks after around eighty dogs and fifty cats at any one time. Most of them were found on the street, but some were given up by owners who couldn’t look after them any more, because they were moving abroad, had become ill or had simply lost interest. The shelter has only four paid staff, so it depends on volunteers like me.
Boshpana shahar chekkasida, eski ferma binosida joylashgan. U bir vaqtning o‘zida taxminan sakson it va ellik mushukka g‘amxo‘rlik qiladi. Ularning aksariyati ko‘chadan topilgan, lekin ba’zilarini chet elga ko‘chib ketayotgani, kasal bo‘lib qolgani yoki shunchaki qiziqishini yo‘qotgani sababli ularga qaray olmay qolgan egalari topshirgan. Boshpanada atigi to‘rtta haq to‘lanadigan xodim bor, shuning uchun u men kabi ko‘ngillilarga tayanadi.
My first day was not glamorous. I spent three hours cleaning out dog cages, and by lunchtime I was covered in things I won’t describe here. Then the manager, Zarina, asked me to take a dog called Bars for a walk. Bars was a big, grey, nervous dog who had been found tied to a tree in winter. He wouldn’t look at me, and he shook when I touched him. We walked slowly round the field in silence.
Birinchi kunim unchalik ajoyib emas edi. Uch soat it kataklarini tozaladim va tushlikkacha bu yerda ta’riflamaydigan narsalarga belanib ketdim. Keyin rahbar Zarina mendan Bars ismli itni sayrga olib chiqishni so‘radi. Bars katta, kulrang, qo‘rqoq it bo‘lib, uni qishda daraxtga bog‘langan holda topishgan. U menga qaramas, tegsam titrardi. Biz dala bo‘ylab jimgina sekin aylanib yurdik.
I went back the next Saturday, and the one after that. Each week, Bars was a little less afraid. In the third week, he wagged his tail when he saw me. In the sixth week, he put his head on my knee while I was sitting on the bench. I’m not ashamed to say that I cried. It’s hard to explain how it feels when an animal who has been badly hurt by people decides to trust you.
Keyingi shanba kuni yana bordim, undan keyingisida ham. Har hafta Bars biroz kamroq qo‘rqardi. Uchinchi haftada u meni ko‘rib dumini likillatdi. Oltinchi haftada men o‘rindiqda o‘tirganimda u boshini tizzamga qo‘ydi. Yig‘laganimni aytishdan uyalmayman. Odamlardan qattiq ozor ko‘rgan hayvon sizga ishonishga qaror qilganda qanday his qilishingizni tushuntirish qiyin.
Volunteering has given me much more than I expected. I’ve made real friends: the other volunteers are students, retired teachers, a dentist and even a famous local singer, and we often go for tea after our shift. I’ve learned how to give medicine to a cat (not easy!), how to calm a frightened dog and how to take good photos of the animals for the shelter’s social media pages, which helps them find new homes.
Ko‘ngillilik menga kutganimdan ancha ko‘p narsa berdi. Haqiqiy do‘stlar orttirdim: boshqa ko‘ngillilar talabalar, nafaqadagi o‘qituvchilar, bir tish shifokori va hatto mashhur mahalliy xonanda, smenamizdan keyin ko‘pincha choyga boramiz. Mushukka dori berishni (oson emas!), qo‘rqib ketgan itni tinchlantirishni va boshpananing ijtimoiy tarmoq sahifalari uchun hayvonlarni chiroyli suratga olishni o‘rgandim, bu ularga yangi uy topishga yordam beradi.
There are sad days too. Some animals are very ill when they arrive, and not all of them survive. Older dogs often wait months or even years for a home, because most people want puppies. And every week, there are more animals arriving than leaving. It can feel like an impossible job. But Zarina always says, “We can’t save them all, but for each one we do save, it means everything.”
G‘amgin kunlar ham bo‘ladi. Ba’zi hayvonlar kelganda juda kasal bo‘ladi va ularning hammasi ham omon qolmaydi. Katta yoshdagi itlar ko‘pincha uy topish uchun oylab, hatto yillab kutishadi, chunki ko‘pchilik kuchukchalarni xohlaydi. Va har hafta ketayotganlardan ko‘ra ko‘proq hayvon keladi. Bu imkonsiz ishdek tuyulishi mumkin. Lekin Zarina doim aytadi: “Biz hammasini qutqara olmaymiz, lekin qutqargan har bir hayvon uchun bu hamma narsani anglatadi.”
And Bars? Last month, a retired couple came to the shelter looking for a calm, older dog. They met Bars, and he put his head on the man’s knee, just as he had done with me. He now lives in a house with a garden and sleeps on the sofa, which I’ve been told is strictly against the rules. If you have a few free hours at the weekend, find your local shelter. You might find that you need them as much as they need you.
Bars-chi? O‘tgan oy nafaqadagi er-xotin boshpanaga tinch, katta yoshdagi it izlab kelishdi. Ular Bars bilan tanishishdi va u xuddi men bilan qilganidek, boshini erkakning tizzasiga qo‘ydi. U endi bog‘li uyda yashaydi va divanda uxlaydi, menga aytishlaricha, bu qoidaga qat’iyan zid ekan. Agar dam olish kunlari bir necha bo‘sh soatingiz bo‘lsa, mahalliy boshpanangizni toping. Balki siz ularga qanchalik kerak bo‘lsangiz, ular ham sizga shunchalik kerakligini anglarsiz.
Tushundingizmi?
