On Sunday, more than two hundred volunteers cleaned the banks of the Chirchik River near the city. The event was organised by a group of university students who were unhappy to see so much plastic in the water.

The volunteers worked from eight in the morning until three in the afternoon. They collected more than four tonnes of rubbish, mostly plastic bottles and bags, but also old tyres, a broken fridge and even a bicycle.

The organisers plan to clean the river every month. They also want the city to put more rubbish bins near the river and to fine people who throw rubbish into the water.
