“My Octopus Teacher”: A Lesson in Patience
Few documentaries manage to be both visually stunning and deeply moving, but “My Octopus Teacher” achieves both with remarkable simplicity.
The film follows a South African filmmaker who, exhausted and depressed, begins diving every day in a cold kelp forest near his home. There he encounters a curious octopus, and over the course of a year, he gradually earns her trust. The underwater photography is breathtaking, capturing moments of hunting, escape and even play that few people have ever witnessed. The film is also carefully structured, following the seasons so that viewers share the filmmaker’s growing sense of wonder.
What struck me most was how intelligent and individual the octopus appeared. I had always thought of such creatures as simple and alien, but the film made me realise that they are capable of curiosity and something close to emotion. It has made me think far more carefully about how we treat the ocean and the creatures that live in it.
That said, some viewers may find the narrator’s personal story slightly sentimental.
Nevertheless, I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who loves nature or simply needs a reminder of the wonders of our planet. It is particularly suitable for families, as it contains little that would upset younger viewers. It is a quiet, beautiful film that stays with you long after it ends.
