“Klara and the Sun” by Kazuo Ishiguro
-
Kazuo Ishiguro has a rare talent for exploring profound questions through quiet, deceptively simple stories, and “Klara and the Sun” is no exception.
-
Set in a near future, the novel is narrated by Klara, an Artificial Friend designed to keep lonely children company. Chosen by a sick teenage girl, Josie, Klara observes the family around her with great care, slowly discovering the hidden fears and sacrifices of the humans she serves. The story is gentle on the surface, but it gradually reveals unsettling questions about the society in which the characters live.
-
Klara is a remarkable creation. Her innocent, precise way of describing the world is often moving and occasionally unsettling, because the reader understands far more than she does. Ishiguro’s prose is calm and restrained, yet it gradually builds a powerful emotional tension. Some readers may find the pace slow, particularly in the opening chapters, but patience is richly rewarded. The final chapters are among the most affecting Ishiguro has written.
-
The novel would be an excellent choice for our book club. It raises questions that are ideal for discussion: what it means to love, whether a machine can have feelings and how technology might change human relationships. Its length is manageable, and it suits readers who enjoy both science fiction and literary fiction.
