Silk and Spices: A Festival for the Senses
If you want to experience the real Uzbekistan, forget the guidebooks and come to the Silk and Spices Festival in Bukhara.
The festival takes place every spring, when the ancient streets of the old city are filled with colour and music. Craftsmen from all over the country display their carpets, silk scarves and pottery, while dancers in traditional costumes perform in the squares. The smell of freshly baked bread and spicy shashlik is everywhere.
What I love most is that it isn’t just a show for tourists. Local families come to celebrate too, and visitors are often invited to join the dancing or taste homemade food.
I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in culture, food or photography. It’s well worth planning a trip around it — you won’t regret it!
