“The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins
I’m not usually a fan of science fiction, but I couldn’t put this book down.
Set in a cruel future world, the novel tells the story of sixteen-year-old Katniss, who volunteers to take her younger sister’s place in a televised competition where young people must fight to survive.
What makes the book so powerful is Katniss herself. She is brave and clever, but she is also stubborn and sometimes makes mistakes, which makes her feel like a real person. The other characters are just as interesting, especially Peeta, whose kindness contrasts with the violence around him.
The story is fast-moving and full of surprises, although some scenes are quite violent. I would recommend it to students aged fourteen and over, particularly those who enjoy adventure stories. Once you start reading, you won’t want to stop!
