The line graph compares the number of cups of tea and coffee that the average person in one country drank each year from 1990 to 2020.
Overall, tea consumption fell steadily over the period, whereas coffee drinking rose considerably. As a result, coffee overtook tea as the more popular drink in around 2009.
In 1990, people drank 900 cups of tea per year, three times as much as coffee, at 300 cups. Over the next thirty years, tea consumption declined gradually, falling to 700 cups in 2005 and to 580 cups by 2020. This represents a fall of more than a third.
Coffee, by contrast, followed an upward trend. Consumption grew slowly in the 1990s but then increased much more quickly, reaching 650 cups in 2010, when it was already slightly higher than that of tea. By 2020, the average person was drinking 760 cups of coffee a year, more than double the 1990 figure.
