The pie charts compare the proportion of trips abroad that residents of one country made for different reasons in 2000 and 2020.
Overall, holidays were the most common reason for travelling abroad in both years, and their share grew considerably. Business travel, on the other hand, became much less significant.
In 2000, holidays accounted for 40% of all trips, closely followed by business travel at 35%. Visiting family made up 15%, while studying abroad represented only 4% and other reasons 6%. Together, holidays and business trips made up three-quarters of all journeys.
By 2020, the proportion of holiday trips had risen to just over half (52%), whereas business travel had roughly halved to 18%. The share of journeys made to visit family stayed almost the same at 17%, but the figure for study more than doubled to 9%. Other reasons fell slightly to 4%. As a result, holidays alone now account for more trips than all the other reasons combined.
