The bar chart compares the proportion of household waste recycled in Germany, South Korea, the UK, the USA and Turkey in 2005 and 2020.
Overall, recycling rates increased in all five countries, with Germany remaining the leader in both years and Turkey recycling the smallest proportion of its waste. The pace of improvement, however, varied considerably.
In 2005, Germany recycled 56% of its household waste, well ahead of South Korea at 45%. The figures for the USA and the UK were much lower, at 30% and 27% respectively, while Turkey recycled just 4%.
By 2020, Germany’s rate had risen to 67%, and South Korea had made significant progress, reaching 60%. The UK showed the most impressive improvement among the Western countries, increasing its rate to 44% and overtaking the USA, where the figure rose only marginally to 32%. Turkey’s rate tripled, but at 12% it was still by far the lowest.
