The table illustrates the proportion of people in four age groups who owned a smartphone in one country in 2015, 2020 and 2025.
Overall, smartphone ownership increased in every age group, and younger people were more likely to own one throughout. The most significant growth, however, was among older adults.
In 2015, the vast majority of 18-to-29-year-olds (86%) already had a smartphone, compared with around two-thirds of those aged 30 to 49. Ownership was much lower among older people: 39% of 50-to-64-year-olds and only 14% of the over-65s had one. In other words, the youngest group was six times more likely to own a smartphone than the oldest.
Over the next decade, ownership among the two youngest groups rose to almost 100%. The figure for 50-to-64-year-olds more than doubled to 90%, while the proportion of people aged 65 and over increased fivefold, reaching 72% in 2025. As a result, the gap between the youngest and oldest groups narrowed from 72 to just 27 percentage points.
