In several countries, secondary school students must complete a certain number of hours of community service before they graduate. I agree with this policy to a large extent, as long as students are given some choice in how they contribute.
The main benefit of community service is that it helps young people develop a sense of responsibility towards society. By helping in hospitals, animal shelters or programmes for elderly people, teenagers learn about problems they might otherwise never see, and they develop empathy for people from different backgrounds. Volunteering also teaches practical skills, such as teamwork, communication and time management, which are valued by universities and employers. Furthermore, it can help students discover interests that influence their future careers; a student who volunteers in a hospital, for example, may decide to study medicine. Communities, meanwhile, benefit from the extra help.
On the other hand, critics argue that compulsory volunteering is a contradiction, because true volunteering should be freely chosen. Students who are forced to participate may do the minimum required without any real commitment, which benefits neither them nor the organisations they work for. In addition, many teenagers already face heavy academic pressure, and adding compulsory service could take time away from their studies or part-time jobs that some families depend on.
These concerns can be reduced if schools offer a wide range of options and allow students to choose activities that match their interests. A flexible schedule, such as completing hours during school holidays, would also ease the pressure on students.
In conclusion, compulsory community service can teach valuable skills and social responsibility, provided that it is flexible and gives students genuine choice.
