IELTS Task 2: News from Social Media
IELTS 2-topshiriq: yangiliklar ijtimoiy tarmoqlardan
More and more people now get their news from social media rather than from newspapers or television.
Do the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages?
Write at least 250 words.
IELTS Writing Task 2 — umumiy ballning uchdan ikki qismini beradi. Savol turini aniqlang (fikr, ikki tomon, afzallik-kamchilik, muammo-yechim yoki ikki savolli) va savolning har bir qismiga javob bering. Pozitsiya kirishda ham, xulosada ham bir xil bo‘lsin.
- discuss the advantages — afzalliklarini muhokama qiling
- discuss the disadvantages — kamchiliklarini muhokama qiling
- say whether the advantages outweigh the disadvantages — afzalliklar ustunmi, ayting
Imtihon strategiyasi
- Vaqtni bo‘ling: 5 daqiqa reja, 30 daqiqa yozish, 5 daqiqa tekshirish.
- Har bir asosiy abzas: markaziy gap → izoh → misol yoki natija.
- Savolning HAR BIR qismiga javob bering — ikki savolli topshiriqda ikkala savolga ham.
- 250 so‘zdan kam bo‘lsa ball kamaytiriladi; 270–320 so‘z eng qulay.
Namuna javob
Pozitsiya aniq, ikkala tomon boy dalillar bilan, akademik atamalar (echo chambers, polarisation) to‘g‘ri ishlatilgan. Namuna hajmi: 281 so‘z.

For many people, especially the young, social media has become the main source of news, replacing the morning newspaper and the evening television bulletin. While this shift offers speed and convenience, I believe its disadvantages, particularly the spread of misinformation, outweigh its benefits.
-
Social media certainly has some advantages as a news source. Information spreads almost instantly, so people can follow important events, such as natural disasters or elections, as they happen. It is also free and offers a far wider variety of voices than traditional media. Ordinary citizens can share eyewitness videos, and stories that mainstream outlets might ignore can reach a global audience. In countries where the press is controlled by the state, social media can be one of the few places where people can access independent reporting.
-
However, these benefits come at a serious cost. Anyone can publish anything online, so false or misleading stories spread just as quickly as accurate ones, and often more quickly, because sensational content attracts more attention. In addition, social media algorithms show users content that matches their existing opinions, trapping them in so-called echo chambers and making societies more divided. Unlike professional journalists, most social media users do not check facts or follow ethical standards, and corrections rarely receive as much attention as the original false claims.
-
These problems threaten informed public debate, which is the foundation of democracy. While platforms and governments are trying to combat misinformation, their efforts have so far had limited success.
-
In conclusion, although social media makes news faster and more diverse, the risks of misinformation and polarisation are more significant. People should therefore continue to rely on trusted professional sources and verify what they read online.
