“The Silent River”, the debut novel by Kamila Aziz, follows three generations of women in a small town on the banks of the Syr Darya. When the youngest, Zuhra, returns home after years abroad to care for her dying grandmother, long-buried family secrets begin to surface.
Kamila Azizning debyut romani “Jim daryo” Sirdaryo bo‘yidagi kichik shaharchadagi uch avlod ayollar hayotini hikoya qiladi. Ularning eng kichigi Zuhra yillar chet elda yashagach, o‘lim to‘shagidagi buvisiga qarash uchun uyga qaytganda, uzoq vaqt ko‘milib yotgan oilaviy sirlar yuzaga chiqa boshlaydi.
Aziz’s greatest strength is her characters. The grandmother, sharp-tongued and stubborn even in illness, is one of the most memorable figures I have encountered in recent fiction. The dialogue feels authentic, and the descriptions of the river, which changes with the seasons and the family’s fortunes, are often beautiful.
Azizning eng kuchli tomoni — uning qahramonlari. Kasal bo‘lsa ham tili achchiq va qaysar buvi so‘nggi badiiy adabiyotda men uchragan eng esda qolarli obrazlardan biri. Dialoglar haqqoniy tuyuladi, mavsumlar va oila taqdiri bilan birga o‘zgaradigan daryo tasvirlari ko‘pincha go‘zal.
The novel is not without flaws. The middle section, which jumps between the 1950s and the present day, is confusing in places, and one or two plot twists feel predictable. At over 450 pages, it could have been shorter.
Roman kamchiliklardan xoli emas. 1950-yillar va hozirgi kun o‘rtasida sakrab turadigan o‘rta qismi ba’zi joylarda chalkash, bir-ikkita syujet burilishlari esa oldindan taxmin qilinadigan tuyuladi. 450 sahifadan ortiq bo‘lgan kitob qisqaroq bo‘lishi mumkin edi.
Nevertheless, this is a moving and confident debut about memory, silence and the things families never say to each other. Readers who enjoy slow, character-driven stories will find it deeply rewarding.
Shunga qaramay, bu xotira, sukunat va oilalar bir-biriga hech qachon aytmaydigan narsalar haqidagi ta’sirli va ishonchli debyut. Sekin, qahramonlarga asoslangan hikoyalarni yoqtiradigan o‘quvchilar uni juda qadrli deb topadi.
One of the novel’s quieter achievements is its portrait of the town itself. Aziz captures the rhythm of small-town life with affection but without sentimentality: the gossip at the bazaar, the weddings that everyone attends, the slow decline as young people leave for the cities. The town becomes almost a fourth main character.
Romanning ko‘zga tashlanmaydigan yutuqlaridan biri — shaharchaning o‘zi tasviri. Aziz kichik shaharcha hayoti ritmini mehr bilan, lekin hissiyotga berilmasdan aks ettiradi: bozordagi g‘iybatlar, hamma qatnashadigan to‘ylar, yoshlar shaharlarga ketgani sari asta-sekin so‘nish. Shaharcha deyarli to‘rtinchi bosh qahramonga aylanadi.
Readers looking for a fast-paced plot may be frustrated. Very little happens in the first hundred pages, and the central secret is revealed slowly, through small hints and half-finished conversations. But patient readers will be rewarded by a final chapter of remarkable emotional power, which I suspect will stay with many readers for a long time.
Tez rivojlanadigan syujet izlayotgan o‘quvchilar hafsalasi pir bo‘lishi mumkin. Birinchi yuz sahifada juda kam voqea sodir bo‘ladi, asosiy sir esa kichik ishoralar va chala qolgan suhbatlar orqali asta-sekin ochiladi. Lekin sabrli o‘quvchilar ajoyib hissiy kuchga ega so‘nggi bob bilan taqdirlanadi, menimcha, u ko‘p o‘quvchilar yodida uzoq qoladi.
