Dear parents and carers, as you know, Tashkent is located in an area where earthquakes can happen. Although serious earthquakes are rare, it is important that all our students know exactly what to do if one occurs. For this reason, School No. 110 will hold a full earthquake safety drill on Thursday, 17 October, starting at 10:30 am. Please read this notice carefully and discuss it with your child at home.

What will happen during the drill? At 10:30, a long alarm will ring throughout the building. This means that an earthquake has started. Students will follow the “Drop, Cover and Hold On” rule. They will drop to the floor, take cover under their desks and hold on to the desk legs until the alarm stops. They must stay away from windows, bookshelves and anything that could fall.

After about one minute, the alarm will stop and a short bell will ring three times. This is the signal to leave the building. Teachers will lead their classes out of the building using the nearest emergency exit, which is shown on the map in every classroom. Students must walk, not run, and must not use the lifts or go back for their bags or coats.

All classes will meet on the main football field, which is far from buildings, trees and electricity lines. Each class has its own place on the field, marked with a numbered sign. When they arrive, teachers will check that every student is present. The whole school should be outside within six minutes. Last year, the drill took nine minutes, so we are hoping to improve this time.

Please note that during the drill, the school gates will be closed. Parents will not be able to enter or collect children between 10:15 and 11:30. If you have an appointment that day, please collect your child before 10:15 or after 11:30. Students with health problems that make it difficult to walk quickly should tell their class teacher before Monday, so that a member of staff can help them.

We also encourage families to prepare at home. Choose a safe meeting place near your home, such as a park, in case you are separated. Keep a small emergency bag with water, a torch, a first aid kit and copies of important documents. Make sure your child knows at least one parent’s phone number by heart.

The drill is not a test, and students will not be given marks. However, we take it very seriously, and we ask students to behave calmly and follow instructions.
