The village of Sarikamish sat at the edge of the desert, and every year the sand came a little closer. When the wind blew from the west, it carried dust into the houses, covered the fields and made the old people cough. Many families had already left for the city. Those who stayed said there was nothing anyone could do. “The desert always wins,” they said.
Sariqamish qishlog‘i cho‘lning chekkasida joylashgan edi va har yili qum biroz yaqinroq kelardi. Shamol g‘arbdan esganda, u uylarga chang olib kirar, dalalarni qoplar va keksalarni yo‘taltirardi. Ko‘plab oilalar allaqachon shaharga ketib qolgan edi. Qolganlar hech kim hech narsa qila olmaydi, deyishardi. “Cho‘l har doim g‘alaba qiladi”, deyishardi ular.
Eleven-year-old Sanjar did not believe them. His teacher had shown the class photos of a place in China where people had planted millions of trees to stop the desert. The trees held the soil together with their roots and protected the land from the wind. “If they can do it,” Sanjar thought, “why can’t we?” That evening, he asked his grandmother for some of the saksaul seeds she kept in a jar in the kitchen.
O‘n bir yoshli Sanjar ularga ishonmasdi. O‘qituvchisi sinfga Xitoydagi bir joyning suratlarini ko‘rsatgan edi, u yerda odamlar cho‘lni to‘xtatish uchun millionlab daraxt ekishgan. Daraxtlar ildizlari bilan tuproqni ushlab turgan va yerni shamoldan himoya qilgan. “Agar ular buni qila olgan bo‘lsa, — deb o‘yladi Sanjar, — nega biz qila olmaymiz?” O‘sha oqshom u buvisidan oshxonadagi idishda saqlaydigan saksovul urug‘laridan bir qismini so‘radi.
Saksaul is a tough little tree that can survive in the desert with very little water. Sanjar planted his first ten seeds in a line on the western edge of the village. Every morning before school, he walked twenty minutes with two buckets of water to give each seed a small drink. Other children laughed at him. Even his older brother called it a waste of time.
Saksovul cho‘lda juda oz suv bilan yashay oladigan chidamli kichik daraxt. Sanjar dastlabki o‘nta urug‘ini qishloqning g‘arbiy chekkasida bir qatorga ekdi. Har kuni ertalab maktabdan oldin u har bir urug‘ga ozgina suv berish uchun ikki chelak suv bilan yigirma daqiqa yurardi. Boshqa bolalar ustidan kulishardi. Hatto akasi ham buni vaqtni behuda sarflash deb atadi.
For two months, nothing happened. Then, one morning in April, Sanjar saw a tiny green shoot coming out of the sand. By the summer, seven of his ten seeds had become small plants. He was so excited that he planted twenty more. He began to collect water that his family had used for washing vegetables, so that he didn’t waste clean water from the well.
Ikki oy davomida hech narsa bo‘lmadi. Keyin, aprel oyining bir tongida, Sanjar qumdan kichkina yashil novda chiqib kelayotganini ko‘rdi. Yozga kelib, o‘nta urug‘idan yettitasi kichik nihollarga aylandi. U shunchalik hayajonlandiki, yana yigirmatasini ekdi. Quduqdagi toza suvni isrof qilmaslik uchun oilasi sabzavot yuvishga ishlatgan suvni yig‘a boshladi.
Slowly, people began to notice. First, his grandmother came with him in the mornings and told him which seeds grew best. Then his friend Oybek, who had laughed at him at first, offered to help. By the end of the second year, there were twelve children planting trees after school. The village teacher made it a school project, and an old farmer lent them a donkey and a cart to carry the water.
Asta-sekin odamlar e’tibor bera boshlashdi. Avval buvisi ertalablari u bilan birga kelib, qaysi urug‘lar yaxshiroq o‘sishini aytib berdi. Keyin avvaliga uning ustidan kulgan do‘sti Oybek yordam berishni taklif qildi. Ikkinchi yil oxiriga kelib, maktabdan keyin daraxt ekadigan bolalar o‘n ikki nafarga yetdi. Qishloq o‘qituvchisi buni maktab loyihasiga aylantirdi, keksa bir dehqon esa suv tashish uchun ularga eshak va arava berib turdi.
News of the project reached the regional newspaper, and then a television programme in Tashkent. After the programme, an environmental organisation contacted the school and offered to provide thousands of young trees and a simple watering system. Adults who had said “the desert always wins” now came out at weekends with spades.
Loyiha haqidagi xabar viloyat gazetasiga, keyin esa Toshkentdagi teleko‘rsatuvga yetib bordi. Ko‘rsatuvdan keyin bir ekologik tashkilot maktab bilan bog‘lanib, minglab ko‘chat va oddiy sug‘orish tizimini taqdim etishni taklif qildi. “Cho‘l har doim g‘alaba qiladi” degan kattalar endi dam olish kunlari belkurak bilan chiqa boshlashdi.
Today, Sanjar is twenty and studies forestry at university. Behind the village, there is a green belt of trees almost three kilometres long. The dust storms are less frequent, and some families have even returned from the city. When people ask Sanjar how he did it, he always gives the same answer: “I didn’t do it. We did it. I just planted the first seed.”
Bugun Sanjar yigirma yoshda va universitetda o‘rmonchilik bo‘yicha o‘qiydi. Qishloq ortida deyarli uch kilometr uzunlikdagi yashil daraxtlar kamari bor. Chang bo‘ronlari kamroq bo‘ladi va ba’zi oilalar hatto shahardan qaytib kelishgan. Odamlar Sanjardan buni qanday qilganini so‘rashsa, u doim bir xil javob beradi: “Men qilmadim. Biz qildik. Men faqat birinchi urug‘ni ekdim.”
