Language-learning apps are everywhere these days, and they all promise the same thing: that you can learn a new language in just a few minutes a day. I decided to test one of the most popular, “Lingo Fox”, by using it every day for three months to learn Spanish. I started as a complete beginner. Here is my honest opinion.

First of all, the app is beautifully designed. The colours are bright, the cartoon fox who guides you through the lessons is very cute, and everything is easy to understand. Each lesson takes about five to ten minutes and includes a mix of activities: matching words with pictures, listening to sentences, translating and speaking into the microphone.

The best thing about Lingo Fox is that it makes you want to come back. The app gives you points for every lesson, and you can compete with friends on a weekly leaderboard. There is also a “streak” counter, which shows how many days in a row you have studied. After a few weeks, I didn’t want to lose my streak, so I studied even on busy days. In three months, I didn’t miss a single day.

I also learned a lot of vocabulary. By the end of the three months, I knew around six hundred Spanish words, including numbers, colours, food, family members and common verbs. The pronunciation practice was useful too, although the microphone sometimes accepted my answers even when I knew my pronunciation was terrible.

However, the app has some serious weaknesses. The grammar explanations are very short, and often there is no explanation at all. You are simply expected to guess the rules from examples. For instance, I translated dozens of sentences with Spanish verbs before I understood why they had so many different endings. In the end, I had to watch videos online to understand the grammar properly.

The biggest problem, though, is speaking. Last month, I went on holiday to Barcelona, and I was excited to use my Spanish. But when a waiter asked me a simple question, I froze. The app had taught me to recognise words and translate sentences, but it had not prepared me for a real conversation, where people speak fast and don’t wait for you to choose the right answer from a list.

So, is Lingo Fox worth it? The basic version is free, but it has a lot of adverts. The premium version costs about eight dollars a month and removes the adverts. In my opinion, the app is an excellent way to start a language and to build a daily habit. But it should not be your only tool. If you really want to speak, you also need a good grammar book and, most importantly, real people to talk to. My rating: three and a half stars out of five.
