Documentaries about the environment face a difficult challenge. They need to make audiences care about problems that often seem distant, enormous and depressing, without either boring them with statistics or leaving them feeling hopeless. “Blue Silence”, the new feature-length documentary from the award-winning director Lena Moravec, mostly succeeds in this task, although it is not without its flaws.
Atrof-muhit haqidagi hujjatli filmlar qiyin vazifaga duch keladi. Ular tomoshabinlarni statistika bilan zeriktirmasdan yoki umidsizlikka tashlamasdan, ko‘pincha uzoq, ulkan va tushkunlikka soluvchi tuyuladigan muammolarga befarq bo‘lmaslikka undashi kerak. Mukofotlarga sazovor bo‘lgan rejissyor Lena Moravetsning yangi to‘liq metrajli hujjatli filmi “Moviy sukunat” bu vazifani asosan uddalaydi, garchi kamchiliklardan xoli bo‘lmasa-da.
The film follows a team of marine scientists over two years as they travel from the Arctic to the coral reefs of Indonesia, investigating the effects of noise pollution on ocean life. This is a refreshingly original subject. While most of us are aware of the dangers of plastic in the sea, few people realise that the oceans are becoming dramatically louder because of shipping, oil exploration and military sonar, and that this noise can disturb whales, dolphins and even tiny fish, which rely on sound to find food, communicate and navigate.
Film ikki yil davomida Arktikadan Indoneziyaning marjon riflarigacha sayohat qilib, shovqin ifloslanishining okean hayotiga ta’sirini tadqiq etayotgan dengiz olimlari jamoasini kuzatib boradi. Bu yangicha va o‘ziga xos mavzu. Ko‘pchiligimiz dengizdagi plastik xavfini bilsak-da, kam odam okeanlar yuk tashish, neft qidiruvi va harbiy sonar tufayli keskin shovqinliroq bo‘lib borayotganini va bu shovqin ozuqa topish, muloqot qilish va yo‘l topish uchun tovushga tayanadigan kitlar, delfinlar va hatto mitti baliqlarni bezovta qilishi mumkinligini anglaydi.
Visually, the film is stunning. The underwater photography is some of the most beautiful I have ever seen, and several scenes stay in the memory long after the film ends: a mother humpback whale and her calf moving slowly through a shaft of sunlight; a vast cloud of silver fish twisting in perfect unison; a coral reef at night, glowing with strange blue light. The cinematographer, Tomás Reyes, deserves every award he is likely to receive.
Vizual jihatdan film hayratlanarli. Suv osti suratga olishlari men ko‘rgan eng go‘zallaridan biri va bir nechta sahna film tugaganidan keyin ham uzoq vaqt xotirada qoladi: quyosh nuri ustunidan sekin suzib o‘tayotgan ona dumli kit va uning bolasi; mukammal uyg‘unlikda buralayotgan kumushrang baliqlarning ulkan buluti; g‘alati ko‘k nur sochib turgan tungi marjon rifi. Operator Tomas Reyes oladigan har bir mukofotga loyiq.
The film’s most powerful device is its use of sound. Moravec regularly cuts from the peaceful natural sounds of the ocean, recorded with special underwater microphones, to the deafening roar of a passing cargo ship. The effect is genuinely shocking. In one memorable scene, the scientists play recordings of a healthy reef to young fish that have been raised in a laboratory, and the fish swim towards the sound; when the same recording is mixed with ship noise, they become confused and swim in circles.
Filmning eng kuchli vositasi tovushdan foydalanishidir. Moravets muntazam ravishda maxsus suv osti mikrofonlari bilan yozib olingan okeanning tinch tabiiy tovushlaridan o‘tib ketayotgan yuk kemasining quloqni kar qiluvchi gumburlashiga o‘tadi. Ta’sir haqiqatan ham larzaga soladi. Esda qolarli bir sahnada olimlar laboratoriyada o‘stirilgan yosh baliqlarga sog‘lom rif yozuvlarini eshittirishadi va baliqlar tovush tomon suzishadi; xuddi shu yozuv kema shovqini bilan aralashtirilganda, ular sarosimaga tushib, aylana bo‘ylab suzishadi.
However, the film has weaknesses. At nearly two and a half hours, it is too long, and the middle section, which focuses on the personal lives of the scientists, slows the pace considerably. While it is interesting to learn that the lead researcher, Dr Amara Osei, gave up a comfortable university job to pursue this work, the repeated scenes of the team cooking dinner on their boat and discussing their families add little to the story.
Biroq filmning zaif tomonlari ham bor. Deyarli ikki yarim soat davom etgani uchun u juda uzun va olimlarning shaxsiy hayotiga qaratilgan o‘rta qismi sur’atni sezilarli darajada sekinlashtiradi. Bosh tadqiqotchi doktor Amara Osei bu ish bilan shug‘ullanish uchun universitetdagi qulay ishidan voz kechganini bilish qiziqarli bo‘lsa-da, jamoaning qayiqda kechki ovqat tayyorlashi va oilalari haqida gaplashishi takrorlanadigan sahnalar hikoyaga deyarli hech narsa qo‘shmaydi.
A more serious criticism is that the film does not give enough attention to solutions. In the final fifteen minutes, we learn that ships can be made much quieter by redesigning their propellers and reducing their speed, and that a simple ten percent reduction in speed can cut noise by up to forty percent. This is fascinating and genuinely hopeful information, but it is presented so quickly that many viewers may miss it. I would have happily sacrificed some of the cooking scenes for a deeper discussion of what can actually be done.
Jiddiyroq tanqid shundaki, film yechimlarga yetarlicha e’tibor bermaydi. So‘nggi o‘n besh daqiqada biz kemalarni eshkak vintlarini qayta loyihalash va tezligini kamaytirish orqali ancha jimroq qilish mumkinligini, tezlikni oddiygina o‘n foizga kamaytirish shovqinni qirq foizgacha qisqartirishi mumkinligini bilib olamiz. Bu maftunkor va haqiqatan ham umid baxsh etuvchi ma’lumot, lekin u shunchalik tez taqdim etiladiki, ko‘plab tomoshabinlar uni o‘tkazib yuborishi mumkin. Haqiqatda nima qilish mumkinligi haqida chuqurroq muhokama uchun men ovqat pishirish sahnalarining bir qismidan bajonidil voz kechgan bo‘lardim.
Despite these reservations, “Blue Silence” is an important and often breathtaking film that opens our ears, quite literally, to a hidden crisis. It is showing in selected cinemas from Friday and will be available on streaming services next spring. Four stars out of five.
Bu e’tirozlarga qaramay, “Moviy sukunat” yashirin inqirozga quloqlarimizni so‘zma-so‘z ma’noda ochadigan muhim va ko‘pincha nafasni rostlab qo‘yadigan film. U jumadan boshlab tanlangan kinoteatrlarda namoyish etiladi va kelgusi bahorda striming xizmatlarida mavjud bo‘ladi. Beshdan to‘rt yulduz.
