It had been Nodir’s idea to go camping in the mountains above Chimgan. “Just one night,” he had told his friends. “We’ll take the tents, cook dinner over a fire and look at the stars. What could go wrong?” So on a warm Friday in May, he, his cousin Javlon and two university friends, Madina and Alisher, drove out of Tashkent with a car full of food and equipment.
Chimyon tepasidagi tog‘larda chodir tikib tunash Nodirning g‘oyasi edi. “Faqat bir kecha”, degan edi u do‘stlariga. “Chodirlarni olamiz, gulxanda kechki ovqat pishiramiz va yulduzlarni tomosha qilamiz. Nima yomon bo‘lishi mumkin?” Shunday qilib, may oyining iliq juma kunida u, amakivachchasi Javlon va ikki universitet do‘sti — Madina va Alisher ovqat va jihozlarga to‘la mashinada Toshkentdan chiqib ketishdi.
They left the car at the end of a dirt road and walked for two hours along a narrow path until they found the perfect spot: a flat, grassy area next to a small river, surrounded by tall trees. The water was clear and very cold, and the only sounds were the birds and the river. They put up the tents, collected wood and soon had a fire going.
Ular mashinani tuproq yo‘lning oxirida qoldirib, tor so‘qmoq bo‘ylab ikki soat yurishdi va nihoyat mukammal joy topishdi: baland daraxtlar bilan o‘ralgan, kichik daryo bo‘yidagi tekis, o‘tloq maydon. Suv tiniq va juda sovuq edi, eshitiladigan yagona ovoz qushlar va daryoniki edi. Ular chodirlarni tikishdi, o‘tin yig‘ishdi va tez orada gulxan yoqishdi.
Dinner was a great success. Alisher, who was studying to be a chef, made shashlik, and Madina had brought homemade bread and salad. As it got dark, they sat around the fire, told stories and laughed. Above them, the sky filled with more stars than any of them had ever seen. Nodir looked at his friends and thought it was the best idea he had ever had.
Kechki ovqat juda muvaffaqiyatli o‘tdi. Oshpazlikka o‘qiyotgan Alisher shashlik tayyorladi, Madina esa uyda yopilgan non va salat olib kelgan edi. Qorong‘i tushgach, ular gulxan atrofida o‘tirib, hikoyalar aytishdi va kulishdi. Ularning tepasida osmon hech biri ilgari ko‘rmagan darajada ko‘p yulduzlarga to‘ldi. Nodir do‘stlariga qarab, bu hayotidagi eng yaxshi g‘oya bo‘ldi, deb o‘yladi.
At around two in the morning, Madina woke up. Something was wrong. The sound of the river was much louder than before, and she could hear rain on the roof of the tent. When she put her hand out of the door, it touched water. She screamed and woke the others. In the light of their torches, they saw that the river had risen and was already flowing between the tents.
Tungi soat ikkilar atrofida Madina uyg‘onib ketdi. Nimadir noto‘g‘ri edi. Daryoning ovozi avvalgidan ancha baland edi va u chodir tomida yomg‘ir ovozini eshitardi. Qo‘lini eshikdan chiqarganda, u suvga tegdi. U qichqirib, boshqalarni uyg‘otdi. Fonarlari yorug‘ida ular daryo ko‘tarilib, allaqachon chodirlar orasidan oqayotganini ko‘rishdi.
There was no time to pack properly. They grabbed their phones, their coats and whatever they could carry, and climbed up the hill to a group of rocks. From there, they watched as the water carried away one of the tents, the cooking pots and most of the food. It was cold, they were wet, and nobody said very much. Javlon tried to call for help, but there was no signal.
Narsalarni to‘g‘ri yig‘ishga vaqt yo‘q edi. Ular telefonlarini, kurtkalarini va ko‘tara oladigan narsalarini olib, tepalikka, toshlar to‘plamiga chiqishdi. U yerdan ular suv chodirlardan birini, qozonlarni va ovqatning ko‘p qismini oqizib ketayotganini kuzatishdi. Sovuq edi, ular ho‘l edi va hech kim deyarli gapirmadi. Javlon yordam chaqirmoqchi bo‘ldi, lekin aloqa yo‘q edi.
They waited for the sun to come up. To keep warm, they sat close together and sang songs, badly. When it was light, the rain stopped and the river began to go down. They found the path and walked slowly back to the car, tired, hungry and covered in mud. Halfway down, they met an old shepherd, who looked at them and laughed. “In spring, the snow melts and the river comes up at night,” he said. “Everyone here knows that.”
Ular quyosh chiqishini kutishdi. Isinish uchun bir-biriga yaqin o‘tirib, yomon bo‘lsa-da, qo‘shiq aytishdi. Yorug‘ tushgach, yomg‘ir to‘xtadi va daryo pasaya boshladi. Ular so‘qmoqni topib, charchagan, och va loyga belangan holda sekin mashina tomon qaytishdi. Yo‘lning yarmida ular keksa cho‘ponni uchratishdi, u ularga qarab kuldi. “Bahorda qor eriydi va daryo kechasi ko‘tariladi”, dedi u. “Bu yerda buni hamma biladi.”
The shepherd took them to his small house and gave them hot tea and bread. Sitting by his stove, the friends finally began to laugh about the night. They lost a tent and a lot of food, but nobody was hurt. Today, it is their favourite story, and Nodir still goes camping every year. But now, before he chooses a place, he always asks a local.
Cho‘pon ularni kichkina uyiga olib borib, issiq choy va non berdi. Uning pechkasi yonida o‘tirib, do‘stlar nihoyat o‘sha tun haqida kula boshlashdi. Ular bitta chodir va ko‘p ovqatni yo‘qotishdi, lekin hech kim jarohat olmadi. Bugun bu ularning sevimli hikoyasi va Nodir hali ham har yili sayohatga chiqadi. Lekin endi joy tanlashdan oldin u doim mahalliy aholidan so‘raydi.
