Few ideas from psychology have achieved the popularity of the “ten-thousand-hour rule”: the claim that roughly ten thousand hours of practice are required to achieve world-class expertise in any field. Popularised by the journalist Malcolm Gladwell in his 2008 bestseller “Outliers”, the rule seemed to offer a democratic and encouraging message. Talent, it implied, was largely a myth; what distinguished the best violinists, chess players and athletes from the rest of us was simply the amount of work they had put in.
Psixologiyadagi kam sonli g‘oyalar “o‘n ming soat qoidasi” kabi mashhurlikka erishgan: har qanday sohada jahon darajasidagi mahoratga erishish uchun taxminan o‘n ming soat mashq kerak, degan da’vo. Jurnalist Malkolm Gladuell tomonidan 2008-yilda chop etilgan “Ajralib turuvchilar” bestsellerida ommalashtirilgan bu qoida demokratik va dalda beruvchi xabarni taklif qilgandek tuyulgan. U iste’dod asosan afsona ekanini nazarda tutgan; eng yaxshi skripkachilar, shaxmatchilar va sportchilarni qolganlarimizdan ajratib turadigan narsa shunchaki ular sarflagan mehnat miqdori edi.
The rule was based on research by the psychologist Anders Ericsson, who in the early 1990s studied violin students at a music academy in Berlin. He found that the students judged by their teachers to be the most accomplished had, by the age of twenty, accumulated on average around ten thousand hours of solitary practice, considerably more than their less accomplished peers. Ericsson, however, was frustrated by the way his findings were simplified. Ten thousand, he pointed out, was merely an average at a particular age, not a magic threshold, and the number of hours required varied enormously between fields.
Bu qoida psixolog Anders Eriksonning tadqiqotiga asoslangan bo‘lib, u 1990-yillarning boshida Berlindagi musiqa akademiyasida skripka talabalarini o‘rgangan. U o‘qituvchilari tomonidan eng mohir deb baholangan talabalar yigirma yoshga kelib o‘rtacha taxminan o‘n ming soat yolg‘iz mashq to‘plaganini, bu ularning kamroq mohir tengdoshlarinikidan ancha ko‘p ekanini aniqlagan. Biroq Erikson topilmalari qanday soddalashtirilganidan norozi bo‘lgan. U o‘n ming shunchaki ma’lum yoshdagi o‘rtacha ko‘rsatkich ekanini, sehrli chegara emasligini va talab qilinadigan soatlar soni sohalar o‘rtasida juda katta farq qilishini ta’kidlagan.
More importantly, Ericsson insisted that not all practice is equal. What mattered was what he called “deliberate practice”: focused, effortful activity designed specifically to improve performance, usually with clear goals, immediate feedback and the guidance of a skilled teacher. Simply repeating a familiar activity, such as playing through pieces one already knows or driving a car every day, does not produce continued improvement. Indeed, many people reach a plateau after a few years in a job and improve very little thereafter, despite decades of experience.
Eng muhimi, Erikson har qanday mashq bir xil emasligini ta’kidlagan. Muhimi u “ongli mashq” deb atagan narsa edi: odatda aniq maqsadlar, darhol fikr-mulohaza va malakali o‘qituvchi rahbarligida natijani yaxshilash uchun maxsus mo‘ljallangan diqqatli, kuch talab qiladigan faoliyat. Allaqachon bilgan asarlarni chalib chiqish yoki har kuni mashina haydash kabi tanish faoliyatni shunchaki takrorlash davomli yaxshilanish bermaydi. Haqiqatan ham, ko‘p odamlar ishda bir necha yildan keyin to‘xtash nuqtasiga yetadi va o‘nlab yillik tajribaga qaramay, shundan keyin juda kam yaxshilanadi.
In 2014, a team of researchers led by Brooke Macnamara published a large analysis that combined the results of dozens of studies to test how much deliberate practice actually explained. Their conclusions were sobering for the more enthusiastic supporters of the theory. Practice certainly mattered, but it accounted for only around a quarter of the differences in performance in games such as chess, about a fifth in music and less than a fifth in sports. In education and professional work, its explanatory power was much smaller still.
2014-yilda Bruk Maknamara boshchiligidagi tadqiqotchilar guruhi ongli mashq aslida qanchalik ko‘p narsani tushuntirishini sinash uchun o‘nlab tadqiqotlar natijalarini birlashtirgan katta tahlilni nashr etdi. Ularning xulosalari nazariyaning ishtiyoqmandroq tarafdorlarini hushyor torttirdi. Mashq, albatta, muhim edi, lekin u shaxmat kabi o‘yinlarda natijalardagi farqlarning atigi taxminan to‘rtdan birini, musiqada beshdan birini va sportda beshdan biridan kamrog‘ini tushuntirgan. Ta’lim va kasbiy ishda uning tushuntirish kuchi bundan ham ancha kichik edi.
What explains the rest? The answer appears to involve a complex mixture of factors. Genetic differences influence physical attributes such as height and muscle composition, as well as cognitive capacities such as working memory. The age at which a person starts matters: musicians who begin in early childhood are more likely to develop absolute pitch, for instance. Personality, motivation, the quality of teaching and simple luck in the opportunities available all play a part. Importantly, these factors interact: a child with a slight initial advantage may receive more encouragement, enjoy practice more and therefore practise more, so that a small difference grows into a large one over time.
Qolganini nima tushuntiradi? Javob omillarning murakkab aralashmasini o‘z ichiga olganga o‘xshaydi. Genetik farqlar bo‘y va mushak tarkibi kabi jismoniy xususiyatlarga, shuningdek, ishchi xotira kabi kognitiv qobiliyatlarga ta’sir qiladi. Odam boshlagan yosh muhim: masalan, erta bolalikda boshlagan musiqachilarda mutlaq eshitish qobiliyati rivojlanish ehtimoli yuqoriroq. Shaxsiyat, motivatsiya, o‘qitish sifati va mavjud imkoniyatlardagi oddiy omad — hammasi rol o‘ynaydi. Muhimi, bu omillar o‘zaro ta’sir qiladi: dastlab ozgina ustunlikka ega bola ko‘proq rag‘bat olishi, mashqdan ko‘proq zavqlanishi va shuning uchun ko‘proq mashq qilishi mumkin, natijada kichik farq vaqt o‘tishi bilan kattasiga aylanadi.
None of this means that practice is unimportant, or that people should give up on activities for which they lack obvious talent. Nobody becomes an expert without extensive practice, and for most of us, who will never compete at the highest level, the quality of our practice is by far the most important factor within our control. The lesson of the research is rather that the original message was too simple in both directions. Talent is not a myth, but neither is it destiny.
Bularning hech biri mashq ahamiyatsiz yoki odamlar aniq iste’dodi bo‘lmagan mashg‘ulotlardan voz kechishi kerak degani emas. Hech kim keng ko‘lamli mashqsiz mutaxassisga aylanmaydi va eng yuqori darajada hech qachon raqobatlashmaydigan ko‘pchiligimiz uchun mashqimiz sifati nazoratimizdagi eng muhim omil hisoblanadi. Tadqiqot saboqi shuki, asl xabar ikkala yo‘nalishda ham juda sodda edi. Iste’dod afsona emas, lekin u taqdir ham emas.
For language learners, the implications are encouraging. Deliberate practice in language learning might mean recording yourself speaking and listening critically, focusing on the specific sounds or structures that cause you difficulty, and seeking correction rather than avoiding it. It is less comfortable than passive exposure, but it is far more effective.
Til o‘rganuvchilar uchun buning oqibatlari dalda beruvchi. Til o‘rganishdagi ongli mashq o‘zingizning gapirishingizni yozib olib, tanqidiy tinglash, sizga qiyinchilik tug‘diradigan aniq tovushlar yoki tuzilmalarga e’tibor qaratish va tuzatishdan qochish o‘rniga uni izlashni anglatishi mumkin. Bu passiv tinglashdan kamroq qulay, lekin ancha samaraliroq.
