Describe a book that had a big influence on you.
You should say:
- what the book is
- when you read it
- what it is about
and explain how it influenced you.
Namuna javob
The book that has had the biggest influence on me is “Sapiens” by Yuval Noah Harari, which I read about four years ago, during my second year at university. A friend lent it to me, saying it would change how I see the world, and I was sceptical at first, because it’s quite a thick non-fiction book. Essentially, it’s a history of humankind, from early humans to the present day, but what makes it unusual is that it focuses on big ideas rather than dates and kings. For example, Harari argues that humans became so powerful because we can cooperate in large numbers by believing in shared stories — things like money, nations and laws, which only exist because we all agree they do. The book influenced me in two main ways. Firstly, it made me much more curious about history, economics and psychology; I started reading far more widely afterwards. Secondly, and more importantly, it made me question things I’d always taken for granted. I became more aware that many of society’s “rules” are human inventions that can be changed. That idea actually played a part in my decision to study public policy, because I realised I wanted to be involved in shaping those rules.

Do people read less than they used to?
Namuna javob
People probably read fewer books, but they read constantly — messages, articles, social media. The concern is that this kind of reading is shallower and may reduce our ability to concentrate on long texts.
Nozik + xavotir.
-
Should children be required to read classic literature at school?
Namuna javob
I think classics are valuable because they help children understand their culture. However, if schools only offer old texts, children may decide reading is boring, so a mix with modern books is better.
Muvozanat.
-
Can films ever be as good as the books they’re based on?
Namuna javob
Occasionally a film captures the spirit of a book, but films have to cut a lot. Books allow you to get inside a character’s thoughts in a way films rarely can.
Taqqoslash.
-
How might reading habits change in the future?
Namuna javob
I expect audiobooks to keep growing, since people can listen while doing other things. Paper books will probably become something of a luxury item.
Bashorat.
