A Sport You Watch

The sport I enjoy watching most is tennis, which might seem a slightly unusual choice in Uzbekistan, where most people are obsessed with football. I got into it about five years ago, when a friend dragged me along to an international tournament in Tashkent, and I was surprised by how gripping it was. These days, I mostly watch the four Grand Slam tournaments on streaming services, which means I sometimes stay up very late for matches in America or Australia. I usually watch with my flatmate, who plays tennis himself and explains the tactics, but for the big finals we invite a few friends round. There are several reasons I enjoy it. Firstly, it’s incredibly psychological — it’s just two people, with no team to hide behind, so you see their nerves and determination very clearly. A player can be losing badly and then completely turn the match around. Secondly, I love the variety of styles; some players rely on power, others on clever angles and patience. And finally, unlike football, there’s no time limit, so a match can go on for five hours, and the tension just keeps building.
