Describe a family member you admire.
You should say:
- who the person is
- what he or she is like
- what he or she has done
and explain why you admire this person.
Namuna javob
The family member I admire most is my uncle Farhod, my mother’s younger brother. He’s in his late forties now, and he’s one of those people who fills a room with energy — he’s always laughing, telling stories and organising everyone. What really sets him apart, though, is what he’s achieved. He grew up in a small village with very little money, and when he was twenty, he lost the use of his legs in a car accident. Doctors told him he’d probably never work again. Instead of giving up, he taught himself computer programming from second-hand books, at a time when hardly anyone in the region even had a computer. Ten years later, he set up a small IT company that now employs about forty people, and he deliberately hires people with disabilities, who often struggle to find work elsewhere. I admire him for several reasons. Obviously, there’s his determination and resilience, but I think what impresses me even more is that he uses his success to help others. He also never presents himself as a victim or a hero; he just gets on with things, usually with a joke. Whenever I feel sorry for myself about a minor problem, I think of him, and it puts things into perspective.

How have family structures changed in your country?
Namuna javob
Traditionally, several generations lived under one roof, but in cities, more young couples now live independently. Family ties are still strong, though — people visit relatives very frequently.
O‘zgarish + davomiylik.
-
Is it important for grandparents to be involved in raising children?
Namuna javob
I think it’s hugely beneficial. Grandparents pass on traditions and offer emotional support, and they give working parents practical help. The only risk is conflicting views on discipline.
Foyda + xavf.
-
Do young people today respect older people as much as in the past?
Namuna javob
Respect is still very important in Uzbek culture, but it’s expressed differently. Young people may be less formal, but many still care deeply about their elders.
Nozik.
-
What values do parents most want to pass on to their children?
Namuna javob
Honesty, hard work and respect for others are probably universal. In my culture, hospitality and family loyalty are also central.
Universal + madaniy.
