The person I’d like to talk about is my former maths teacher, Mr Karimov, who taught me in the last three years of school. He wasn’t a typical teacher at all. He was in his sixties and had worked as an engineer for most of his life before deciding to teach, because he felt young people weren’t being taught to think logically. What he did that was so special was to connect maths to real life. Instead of just solving equations, we calculated the cost of building a bridge or the best route for a delivery van. Outside lessons, he ran a free club for students who couldn’t afford private tutors, and several of them went on to win national olympiads. The reason he inspires me is that he proved it’s never too late to change direction and do something meaningful. He also showed me that a good teacher can change the course of someone’s life — he certainly changed mine, because he’s the reason I chose to study engineering.
