Describe a law or rule that you think should be changed.
You should say:
- what the law or rule is
- who it affects
- how you would change it
and explain why you think it should be changed.
Namuna javob
A rule I believe should be reformed is the way many countries, including to some extent my own, handle minor, non-violent offences committed by young people — things like petty theft or vandalism — primarily through criminal records and, in some cases, short custodial sentences. These rules affect teenagers and young adults most of all, and disproportionately those from poorer backgrounds, who are more likely to be caught up in such offences and less likely to have access to good legal support. My concern is that a criminal record, even for something trivial, can follow a young person for years, making it far harder to get a job or a place at university. Paradoxically, this can push them towards further crime, because the legitimate paths have been closed off. If I could change it, I’d expand the use of restorative justice for first-time, non-violent offences. That would mean offenders meeting their victims, where the victim agrees, understanding the harm they caused and making amends — perhaps through community work or repairing damage. Records would be expunged after a period of good behaviour. I think this change is justified for several reasons. Evidence from countries such as New Zealand and Norway suggests restorative approaches reduce reoffending and are significantly cheaper than prison. Victims also often report greater satisfaction, because they receive an apology and an explanation rather than simply seeing someone punished. Fundamentally, I believe the justice system should aim to make society safer in the long term, not just to satisfy an immediate desire for retribution.

What is the main purpose of punishment?
Namuna javob
It serves several, sometimes conflicting, purposes: deterrence, protecting the public, rehabilitation and retribution. I’d argue modern systems should prioritise rehabilitation and protection, since retribution alone does little to reduce future harm.

-
Are harsher punishments an effective deterrent?
Namuna javob
The evidence suggests that the certainty of being caught matters far more than the severity of the punishment. Most offenders don’t calculate penalties in advance.

-
How can society reduce crime among young people?
Namuna javob
By tackling root causes — poverty, school exclusion, lack of opportunities — and by providing positive alternatives such as youth centres, sport and mentoring.
Profilaktik yondashuv.
-
Should prisoners have the right to education?
Namuna javob
I think so. Education is one of the most effective ways to reduce reoffending, so it serves the public interest as much as the prisoner’s.
