Describe a time when social media had a positive effect on your life or community.
You should say:
- what happened
- which platform was involved
- who was affected
and explain why it had a positive effect.
Namuna javob
An example of social media having a genuinely positive effect occurred about two years ago in my neighbourhood in Tashkent. An elderly man with early dementia, who lived a few streets away, went missing one winter evening. His daughter posted a photograph and description in our local Telegram group, which has around four thousand members — residents, shop owners, taxi drivers. Within minutes, the message had been forwarded to dozens of other groups across the district. People began organising themselves: some checked bus stations and parks, others shared updates on where he’d been seen. A taxi driver recognised him from the photo near the railway station about three hours later and brought him safely home. I was struck by several things. Firstly, the speed — something that might once have taken days of door-to-door searching was resolved in an evening. Secondly, the platform transformed loosely connected neighbours into an effective, self-organising network. Many of the people who helped had never met the family. And thirdly, it showed social media working at a human scale; it wasn’t about influencers or arguments, but practical solidarity. Since then, the same group has been used to organise blood donations, collect winter clothes for families in need and even find lost pets. Of course, social media has well-documented downsides, and the same group occasionally spreads rumours. But that evening convinced me that its impact depends enormously on how communities choose to use it. When it amplifies existing social bonds rather than replacing them, it can be remarkably powerful.

-
Has social media made societies more polarised?
Namuna javob
There’s substantial evidence that algorithms which reward outrage can deepen divisions, by showing people more extreme content and creating echo chambers. But polarisation also has economic and political roots that predate social media.
Nozik sabablilik.
-
Should social media companies be responsible for the content on their platforms?
Namuna javob
To a significant degree, yes — especially regarding illegal content and the design of their algorithms. But we must be careful that regulation doesn’t become a tool for censoring legitimate dissent.
Mas’uliyat + xavf.
-
Is there a minimum age at which children should use social media?
Namuna javob
Most platforms say thirteen, and some countries are considering sixteen. I think the evidence on mental health, particularly for teenage girls, justifies stronger protections.
Dalil asosida.
-
Can social media be a force for democracy?
Namuna javob
It can amplify marginalised voices and help citizens organise, as we’ve seen in various protest movements. But it can equally be used for disinformation and surveillance.
Ikki tomon.
