Proposal: International Language Exchange
Introduction
This proposal sets out the benefits of a language exchange programme with a partner school abroad, recommends suitable activities and considers possible difficulties.
Benefits
Regular contact with native speakers would give students the chance to use English in real situations, improving their fluency and confidence far more quickly than classroom practice alone. It would also deepen their understanding of another culture and, in turn, allow them to share their own. Speaking with peers, rather than teachers, also tends to make students less afraid of making mistakes. Many students report that their motivation increases when they have a genuine reason to communicate.
Suggested activities
The programme could begin with weekly online video sessions in which pairs of students spend half the time speaking each language. Joint projects, such as creating a short film about each other’s cities, would encourage collaboration. Ideally, the programme would culminate in a two-week exchange visit.
Potential problems
Time differences could make online meetings difficult to arrange; however, this could be solved by recording messages when live sessions are impossible. The cost of visits may also be a barrier, so it is recommended that the school seek sponsorship and offer scholarships to students who need financial support.
Conclusion
The programme would offer considerable educational and cultural benefits, and the challenges involved are manageable with careful planning.
