The Sharq Taronalari Festival, Samarkand
Held every two years against the spectacular backdrop of the Registan, the Sharq Taronalari music festival is one of Central Asia’s most ambitious cultural events.
Over five days, musicians from more than sixty countries perform traditional music, from Indian ragas to African drumming, on a stage set in front of the illuminated madrasas. Alongside the competition, there are exhibitions of crafts and informal concerts in the city’s parks and courtyards. The opening ceremony, with hundreds of dancers in traditional costumes, is a spectacular event in itself.
Where the festival truly excels is in its atmosphere. Hearing ancient melodies performed beneath centuries-old buildings is a genuinely magical experience, and the diversity of performers means that every evening brings something unexpected. The informal concerts are equally rewarding, as they offer a chance to talk to the musicians and local residents.
That said, the organisation could be improved. Information in English was difficult to find, tickets for the main concerts sold out quickly, and the evening programme often started late. Accommodation in the city also becomes expensive during the festival. Visitors should therefore book hotels several months in advance.
Despite these drawbacks, the festival would be ideal for anyone with an interest in world music or Central Asian culture. Visitors who are flexible and willing to plan ahead will find it an unforgettable experience.
