The Savitsky Museum: A Hidden Treasure
Located in the remote city of Nukus, far from the usual tourist routes, the Savitsky Museum is one of the most surprising museums I have ever visited.
It holds an extraordinary collection of Russian and Uzbek art from the early twentieth century, much of which was banned during the Soviet period. The paintings are displayed in bright, modern halls, and there is also a fascinating collection of ancient objects from the region.
The highlight for me was learning the story of Igor Savitsky himself, the artist who secretly saved thousands of these paintings from destruction. Knowing the risks he took made every picture feel more meaningful.
The museum is not easy to reach, and there is little information in English. Nevertheless, I would strongly recommend it to anyone who loves art or history. It is well worth the long journey.
