The line graph illustrates the proportion of commuters in one city who used cars, public transport and bicycles to get to work over a thirty-year period.
Overall, the car replaced public transport as the most common way of commuting, although its popularity declined after 2010. Cycling, which was the least popular option throughout, became significantly more common in the final decade.
In 1990, more than half of commuters (55%) used public transport, compared with 35% who drove and only 10% who cycled. Over the next twenty years, car use rose steadily to a peak of 58% in 2010, while the share of public transport fell to 34%. At the same time, cycling declined slightly to 8%.
Between 2010 and 2020, the trends shifted. The proportion of people driving dropped to 45%, and public transport remained almost unchanged at 35%. Meanwhile, cycling, which had stayed at around 8% for two decades, doubled to 20%. As a result, one in five commuters travelled by bicycle in 2020.
