The two pie charts compare the proportion of electricity that one country generated from five different sources in 2005 and 2025.
Overall, the country moved away from coal towards renewable energy, especially solar power. Natural gas, however, remained a major source throughout, and by 2025 it had replaced coal as the main supplier of electricity.
In 2005, coal was the dominant source, providing 45% of all electricity, while natural gas supplied 38%. Hydroelectric power accounted for 12%, and solar and wind together made up a tiny 5%. In other words, fossil fuels produced 83% of the country’s electricity.
Twenty years later, the share of coal had fallen dramatically to just 15%, a third of its earlier level. Natural gas rose slightly to 40%, and hydro remained almost stable at 13%. The most remarkable change was in renewables: solar power increased tenfold to 20%, and wind power quadrupled to 12%. Together, renewable sources generated 45% of electricity, compared with only 17% in 2005.
