The two pie charts compare the proportion of energy used for five different purposes in a typical household in one country in 2000 and 2020.
Overall, heating remained the largest single use of energy in both years, but its share fell considerably. The most striking change was the rapid rise in energy used for electronic devices.
In 2000, heating accounted for just over half of all household energy (52%), followed by water heating at 20%. Cooking and lighting made up 12% and 10% respectively, while electronics represented only 6%. In other words, heating and water heating together accounted for almost three-quarters of household energy use.
Twenty years later, the share of heating had dropped to 38%, and water heating, cooking and lighting had all declined slightly, to 17%, 10% and 7%. By contrast, the proportion used for electronics more than quadrupled to 28%, making it the second largest category. Heating, however, still used more energy than any other purpose.
