The table compares the proportion of their income that households in three countries spend on housing, food, transport, education and leisure.
Overall, there are clear differences between the countries: households in Country A spend most on housing and leisure, whereas those in Country C devote the largest share of their income to food. Country B falls between the two.
In Country A, housing is the biggest expense at 32%, followed by leisure at 18% and transport at 16%. Only 14% goes on food and just 6% on education. In Country B, food is the main cost (28%), with housing second at 22%.
Country C shows the opposite pattern to Country A. Food accounts for 39% of spending, more than twice the share spent on housing (18%), and education takes 15%, the highest figure of the three countries. By contrast, families there spend only 5% on leisure, less than a third of the figure for Country A.
