The pie chart illustrates the breakdown of a typical university student’s monthly spending in one country across six categories.
Overall, accommodation and food together account for almost two-thirds of the budget, while study materials make up a surprisingly small share. The remaining categories each account for less than an eighth of the total.
The largest single expense is accommodation, which takes up 40% of students’ money. Food is the second biggest category at a quarter of the total, meaning that these two essential costs represent 65% of all spending. Accommodation alone costs more than food and transport combined.
The remaining third is divided between several smaller items. Entertainment accounts for 12%, slightly more than transport at 10%. Interestingly, students spend less on books and study materials (8%) than on entertainment, and the “other” category makes up just 5% of the budget. Taken together, entertainment and transport represent just over a fifth of the budget. This suggests that most of the money goes on basic living costs rather than on studying itself.
