The bar chart illustrates how many hours a week teenagers in one country devoted to five leisure activities in 2010 and 2020.
Overall, the most noticeable change was the huge growth in time spent on social media, which replaced television as the main activity. Gaming also became more popular, whereas the other three activities declined.
In 2010, teenagers watched television for 14 hours a week, more than any other activity. Gaming came second at 7 hours, followed by sport at 6 hours and social media at only 5. Reading was the least popular pastime, at just 4 hours. In other words, screen-based activities already took up most of their free time.
By 2020, however, the picture had changed considerably. Time on social media more than tripled to 17 hours, while TV viewing fell sharply to 6 hours. Gaming rose to 11 hours, whereas sport dipped slightly to 5 hours and reading halved to just 2 hours a week.
