The bar chart compares the proportion of water used by agriculture, industry and households in Central Asia, Europe and North America.
Overall, agriculture is by far the largest user of water in Central Asia, whereas in Europe and North America industry consumes the biggest share. In all three regions, households use the smallest proportion.
In Central Asia, an overwhelming 88% of water goes to agriculture. Industry and households account for only 7% and 5% respectively. In other words, agriculture uses more than seven times as much water as industry and households combined.
The pattern is quite different in the other two regions. In Europe, industry uses half of all water, while agriculture takes 30% and households a fifth. North America has a more balanced distribution: industry and agriculture use similar amounts, at 46% and 40%, and households account for the remaining 14%. Households in Europe therefore use four times the share of water that households in Central Asia do.
