Shopping has become one of the most popular leisure activities in the modern world, and homes are filled with clothes, gadgets and objects that are rarely used. This essay will examine the reasons for this behaviour and its consequences for both individuals and the planet.
The main driver of excessive consumption is advertising. Companies spend vast sums persuading people that new products will make them happier, more attractive or more successful. Social media has intensified this pressure, as influencers constantly display new purchases, and users compare their own lives with these carefully edited images. Moreover, many products are now extremely cheap, particularly clothing, so people buy items on impulse and throw them away after a few uses. Online shopping, which allows people to buy anything with a single click, makes this even easier. For some, possessions have also become a symbol of social status.
The effects on individuals are often negative. Many people fall into debt by buying things they cannot afford, which causes stress and anxiety. Research also suggests that the pleasure of buying something new fades quickly, so constant consumption rarely leads to lasting happiness. Homes become cluttered, and time spent shopping replaces more meaningful activities.
The environmental consequences are even more serious. Producing goods consumes enormous amounts of energy, water and raw materials, and the fashion industry alone is responsible for a significant share of global carbon emissions. Unwanted items end up in landfill or are burned, releasing harmful substances.
In conclusion, people buy unnecessary things mainly because of advertising, social pressure and low prices. This habit harms both personal wellbeing and the environment, so encouraging more mindful consumption should be a priority.
