The bar chart compares the proportion of households in one country that owned desktop computers, smartphones and tablets in 2005, 2015 and 2025.
Overall, smartphones went from being a minority device to by far the most widespread, while desktop computers became steadily less common. Tablet ownership also rose considerably, although it remained below that of smartphones throughout the period.
In 2005, desktop computers were the most common device, found in 62% of homes. Only 18% of households had a smartphone, and tablets were almost non-existent at just 3%. Over the following two decades, desktop ownership fell steadily, dropping to 48% in 2015 and to 31% in 2025.
Smartphones, by contrast, saw dramatic growth. Their share more than quadrupled to 74% in 2015 and reached 93% by 2025, meaning that almost every household owned one. Tablets followed a similar but more moderate upward trend, climbing to 41% in 2015 and to just over half of all homes (52%) in the final year.
