I have a secret that I kept for most of my life: until last year, I couldn’t swim. I grew up in a small town far from the sea, and there was no swimming pool. When I was a child, I nearly fell into a deep canal, and after that I was afraid of water. On family holidays, I always sat on the beach and watched while everyone else swam.
Hayotimning ko‘p qismida saqlab kelgan bir sirim bor: o‘tgan yilgacha men suza olmasdim. Men dengizdan uzoqdagi kichik shaharchada o‘sganman va u yerda suzish havzasi yo‘q edi. Bolaligimda chuqur ariqqa tushib ketishimga oz qolgan va shundan keyin suvdan qo‘rqardim. Oilaviy ta’tillarda men doim sohilda o‘tirib, boshqalar suzayotganini tomosha qilardim.
Last year, I turned forty. My daughter, who is a great swimmer, gave me a strange birthday present: ten swimming lessons at our local pool. I was angry at first. “I’m too old for this,” I said. But she looked at me and said, “Mum, you always tell me that it’s never too late to learn something new.” What could I say?
O‘tgan yili men qirq yoshga to‘ldim. Juda yaxshi suzuvchi bo‘lgan qizim menga g‘alati tug‘ilgan kun sovg‘asini berdi: mahalliy suzish havzasida o‘nta suzish darsi. Avvaliga jahlim chiqdi. “Men buning uchun juda qariman”, dedim. Lekin u menga qarab: “Oyi, siz doim menga yangi narsani o‘rganish hech qachon kech emas, deysiz-ku”, dedi. Nima ham deya olardim?
My first lesson was terrible. My heart was beating fast, and I didn’t want to go into the water. My teacher, a calm young man called Timur, was very patient. For the whole first lesson, I just stood in the shallow end and put my face in the water. That was all. But when I came home, I felt that I had done something important.
Birinchi darsim dahshatli bo‘ldi. Yuragim tez urardi va suvga tushgim kelmasdi. Murabbiyim, Timur ismli vazmin yigit juda sabrli edi. Butun birinchi dars davomida men shunchaki havzaning sayoz qismida turib, yuzimni suvga botirdim. Bor-yo‘g‘i shu. Lekin uyga qaytganimda, muhim bir ish qilgandek his qildim.
Every week, it got a little easier. In the third lesson, I learned to float on my back while Timur held me. In the fifth lesson, I swam two metres alone! I was so happy that I laughed and swallowed a lot of water. The other people in the pool clapped for me. Many of them were older than me, and some of them were also learning.
Har hafta biroz osonlashib bordi. Uchinchi darsda Timur meni ushlab turganda chalqancha suv ustida qalqib turishni o‘rgandim. Beshinchi darsda yolg‘iz o‘zim ikki metr suzdim! Shunchalik xursand bo‘ldimki, kulib yubordim va ko‘p suv yutib yubordim. Havzadagi boshqa odamlar men uchun qarsak chalishdi. Ularning ko‘pchiligi mendan katta edi va ba’zilari ham o‘rganayotgan edi.
After ten lessons, I could swim twenty-five metres, the whole length of the pool. I’m not fast, and my style isn’t beautiful, but I can swim. Now I go to the pool twice a week before work. It’s good for my back, and I sleep much better. More importantly, I’m not afraid any more.
O‘nta darsdan keyin men yigirma besh metr — havzaning butun uzunligi bo‘ylab suza oldim. Men tez emasman va uslubim chiroyli emas, lekin suza olaman. Endi ishdan oldin haftasiga ikki marta havzaga boraman. Bu belimga foydali va ancha yaxshi uxlayman. Eng muhimi, endi qo‘rqmayman.
This summer, we went to the sea in Turkey. On the first morning, I walked into the water with my daughter, and we swam together for the first time. She had tears in her eyes, and so did I. If you are afraid of something, my advice is simple: take the first small step. You might surprise yourself.
Bu yoz biz Turkiyaga, dengizga bordik. Birinchi kuni ertalab qizim bilan suvga kirdim va biz birinchi marta birga suzdik. Uning ko‘zlarida yosh bor edi, meniki ham. Agar biror narsadan qo‘rqsangiz, maslahatim oddiy: birinchi kichik qadamni qo‘ying. Balki o‘zingizni o‘zingiz hayratda qoldirarsiz.
