Dear Mr and Mrs Ferreira, I have been back in Tashkent for two weeks now, and I still think about you every day. I wanted to write to thank you properly for everything you did for me during my three months in Lisbon. When I arrived at your door in September, I was nervous, tired and very far from home. When I left in December, I felt that I was leaving a second family.
Hurmatli janob va xonim Ferreyra, Toshkentga qaytganimga ikki hafta bo‘ldi va hali ham har kuni sizlar haqingizda o‘ylayman. Lissabondagi uch oyim davomida men uchun qilgan barcha ishlaringiz uchun sizlarga to‘g‘ri minnatdorchilik bildirish uchun yozmoqchi edim. Sentabrda eshigingiz oldiga kelganimda asabiy, charchagan va uydan juda uzoqda edim. Dekabrda ketayotganimda esa ikkinchi oilamni tark etayotgandek his qildim.
I remember my first evening very clearly. My flight had been delayed, and I arrived after midnight. I was worried that you would be angry, but you were both waiting for me with a hot bowl of soup and a smile. Mrs Ferreira, you showed me my room and said, “This is your home now.” I didn’t understand much Portuguese then, but I understood that.
Birinchi oqshomimni juda aniq eslayman. Reysim kechiktirilgan edi va men yarim tundan keyin yetib keldim. Jahlingiz chiqadi deb xavotirda edim, lekin ikkalangiz ham meni bir kosa issiq sho‘rva va tabassum bilan kutib turgan edingiz. Ferreyra xonim, siz menga xonamni ko‘rsatib: “Endi bu sizning uyingiz”, dedingiz. O‘shanda men portugal tilini unchalik tushunmasdim, lekin buni tushundim.
Thanks to you, my Portuguese improved much faster than I expected. Mr Ferreira, I will never forget our long conversations at breakfast, when you patiently corrected my mistakes and explained the news to me. And thank you for taking me to see your favourite football team play. I still don’t really understand why everyone was shouting at the referee, but it was one of the most exciting evenings of my life!
Sizlar tufayli portugal tilim kutganimdan ancha tez yaxshilandi. Janob Ferreyra, nonushtadagi uzoq suhbatlarimizni hech qachon unutmayman, o‘shanda siz sabr bilan xatolarimni tuzatib, yangiliklarni menga tushuntirardingiz. Va meni sevimli futbol jamoangiz o‘yinini ko‘rishga olib borganingiz uchun rahmat. Hali ham nega hamma hakamga baqirganini to‘liq tushunmayman, lekin bu hayotimdagi eng hayajonli oqshomlardan biri bo‘ldi!
I also learned so much about Portuguese food. Before I came, I had never eaten fish for breakfast, and I was a little shocked the first time! But now I miss your grilled sardines and, of course, your famous custard tarts. I have tried to make them here for my family using the recipe you gave me, but they were not as good as yours. My mother says I need more practice.
Portugal taomlari haqida ham juda ko‘p narsa o‘rgandim. Kelishimdan oldin nonushtada hech qachon baliq yemagan edim va birinchi marta biroz hayratda qoldim! Lekin endi sizning panjarada pishirilgan sardinalaringizni va, albatta, mashhur qaymoqli pirojniylaringizni sog‘inaman. Bergan retseptingiz bo‘yicha ularni bu yerda oilam uchun tayyorlashga harakat qildim, lekin ular siznikidek yaxshi chiqmadi. Onam ko‘proq mashq qilishim kerakligini aytyapti.
In return, I hope I taught you a little about Uzbekistan. I will always remember the evening I cooked plov for you and your neighbours. I was so worried that it would be a disaster, because I couldn’t find all the right ingredients, but everyone asked for a second plate. Mrs Ferreira, I was very happy when you said you would make it again for your grandchildren.
Evaziga umid qilamanki, sizlarga O‘zbekiston haqida ozgina bo‘lsa ham o‘rgatdim. Sizlar va qo‘shnilaringiz uchun osh pishirgan oqshomni doim eslayman. Barcha kerakli masalliqlarni topa olmaganim uchun hammasi barbod bo‘ladi deb juda xavotirda edim, lekin hamma ikkinchi likopchani so‘radi. Ferreyra xonim, uni nevaralaringiz uchun yana pishirishingizni aytganingizda juda xursand bo‘ldim.
My studies at the university went very well. I passed all my exams, and my professor has invited me to apply for a master’s programme in Lisbon next year. I am seriously thinking about it. If I do come back, I hope I can visit you often, and perhaps help you in the garden as I used to on Sunday mornings.
Universitetdagi o‘qishlarim juda yaxshi o‘tdi. Barcha imtihonlarimni topshirdim va professorim meni kelgusi yili Lissabondagi magistratura dasturiga hujjat topshirishga taklif qildi. Men bu haqda jiddiy o‘ylayapman. Agar qaytib kelsam, sizlarni tez-tez ziyorat qilishga va, ehtimol, yakshanba kunlari ertalab qilganimdek, bog‘da sizlarga yordam berishga umid qilaman.
I have sent you a small package by post. Inside, you will find a hand-painted plate from Rishtan, which is famous for its blue ceramics, and a bag of dried apricots from my grandmother’s garden. They should arrive in about three weeks. Please give my love to your daughter Ana and to Tobias the cat. With warmest wishes and endless thanks, Jahongir.
Sizlarga pochta orqali kichik posilka yubordim. Uning ichida ko‘k sopol buyumlari bilan mashhur Rishtondan qo‘lda bo‘yalgan likopcha va buvimning bog‘idan quritilgan o‘rik bor. Ular taxminan uch haftada yetib borishi kerak. Iltimos, qizingiz Ana va mushuk Tobiasga mehrimni yetkazing. Eng iliq tilaklar va cheksiz minnatdorchilik bilan, Jahongir.
