It was raining heavily when Leila left the café, and only when she reached the bus stop did she realise she had forgotten her umbrella. It was nothing special, a cheap black one, so she decided not to go back.
Leyla kafedan chiqqanda kuchli yomg‘ir yog‘ayotgan edi va faqat avtobus bekatiga yetganda soyabonini unutganini angladi. U alohida narsa emasdi, oddiy arzon qora soyabon edi, shuning uchun qaytmaslikka qaror qildi.
A week later, she returned to the café and found a note attached to the umbrella stand: “To whoever left a black umbrella last Tuesday: I borrowed it to get home. Sorry! It’s behind the counter. I’ve left you something too.” Behind the counter, next to her umbrella, was a small book of poems.
Bir haftadan keyin u kafega qaytib, soyabon tokchasiga ilingan xatni topdi: “O‘tgan seshanba qora soyabon qoldirgan kishiga: uyga yetib olish uchun uni olib turdim. Kechiring! U peshtaxta ortida. Sizga bir narsa qoldirdim.” Peshtaxta ortida, soyaboni yonida kichkina she’rlar kitobi turardi.
Leila read the book on the bus and found a phone number written inside the back cover, with the words “if you ever want to discuss poetry”. She hesitated for days. She was not the kind of person who called strangers. Eventually, curiosity won.
Leyla kitobni avtobusda o‘qidi va orqa muqovasi ichida “agar she’riyat haqida suhbatlashishni istasangiz” degan so‘zlar bilan yozilgan telefon raqamini topdi. U bir necha kun ikkilandi. U notanishlarga qo‘ng‘iroq qiladigan odam emas edi. Oxir-oqibat qiziqish g‘alaba qildi.
Twelve years later, the umbrella hangs on the wall of the house she shares with Daniel, the stranger who borrowed it. Their children have been told the story so many times that they can recite it, and they always ask the same question: “What if it hadn’t rained?”
O‘n ikki yil o‘tib, soyabon Leyla soyabonni olib ketgan notanish Daniel bilan birga yashaydigan uyning devorida osig‘liq turibdi. Farzandlariga bu voqea shunchalik ko‘p aytilganki, ular uni yoddan aytib bera oladi va doim bir xil savolni berishadi: “Agar yomg‘ir yog‘maganida-chi?”
Their first conversation was awkward. Leila had prepared a list of questions about the poems, but Daniel kept apologising for the umbrella. After ten minutes of nervous laughter, they agreed to meet at the same café the following Saturday, “to discuss poetry properly”. They talked for four hours.
Ularning birinchi suhbati noqulay o‘tdi. Leyla she’rlar haqida savollar ro‘yxatini tayyorlagan edi, lekin Daniel soyabon uchun uzr so‘rayverdi. O‘n daqiqalik asabiy kulgidan keyin ular keyingi shanba o‘sha kafeda “she’riyatni jiddiy muhokama qilish uchun” uchrashishga kelishib olishdi. Ular to‘rt soat gaplashishdi.
Over the following months, they discovered how much they had in common: a love of rainy days, old films and terrible jokes. They also discovered their differences. Leila planned everything carefully; Daniel, as she often reminds him, was the kind of person who borrowed umbrellas from strangers.
Keyingi oylarda ular qanchalik umumiy jihatlari borligini kashf etishdi: yomg‘irli kunlar, eski filmlar va bema’ni hazillarga muhabbat. Ular farqlarini ham kashf etishdi. Leyla hammasini puxta rejalashtirardi; Daniel esa, Leyla unga tez-tez eslatganidek, notanishlarning soyabonini olib ketadigan odam edi.
