Javlon had prepared for everything. He had practised coding problems for weeks, memorised the company’s history and rehearsed answers to every question he could imagine. So when the interviewer leaned back and asked, “Tell me about a time you failed,” he froze.
Javlon hamma narsaga tayyorlangan edi. U haftalar davomida dasturlash masalalarini mashq qilgan, kompaniya tarixini yodlab olgan va tasavvur qila oladigan har bir savolga javoblarni takrorlagan edi. Shuning uchun suhbatdosh suyanib o‘tirib: “Muvaffaqiyatsizlikka uchragan vaqtingiz haqida gapirib bering”, deb so‘raganda, u qotib qoldi.
His instinct was to give a safe answer, the kind of “failure” that is really a disguised strength. But something in the interviewer’s expression suggested she had heard that answer a hundred times. So he told the truth.
Uning ichki tuyg‘usi xavfsiz javob berish edi — aslida yashiringan kuchli tomon bo‘lgan “muvaffaqiyatsizlik”. Lekin suhbatdoshning yuz ifodasidagi nimadir u bu javobni yuz marta eshitganini anglatardi. Shuning uchun u haqiqatni aytdi.
He described a university project he had led, in which he had refused to listen to his teammates’ concerns because he was sure his approach was right. Two days before the deadline, the system collapsed. They submitted late and received the lowest mark in the class. “I learned that being confident and being right are not the same thing,” he said.
U o‘zi boshqargan universitet loyihasini tasvirlab berdi: o‘z yondashuvi to‘g‘ri ekaniga ishonchi komil bo‘lgani uchun jamoadoshlarining xavotirlarini tinglashdan bosh tortgan. Muddatdan ikki kun oldin tizim qulagan. Ular kech topshirib, sinfdagi eng past bahoni olishgan. “Ishonchli bo‘lish va haq bo‘lish bir narsa emasligini o‘rgandim”, dedi u.
Three days later, he received an offer. In his first week, his new manager told him why: “Everyone can solve the coding problems. We hired you because you could admit you were wrong.”
Uch kundan keyin u taklif oldi. Birinchi haftasida yangi rahbari sababini aytdi: “Dasturlash masalalarini hamma yecha oladi. Biz sizni xato qilganingizni tan ola olganingiz uchun ishga oldik.”
Looking back, Javlon realised how close he had come to giving the “perfect” answer. He had even prepared one: a story about working too hard and forgetting to rest, the kind of weakness that is secretly a strength. It would have been safe, polished and completely forgettable.
Orqaga nazar tashlab, Javlon “mukammal” javob berishiga qanchalik yaqin bo‘lganini angladi. U hatto shunday javob ham tayyorlab qo‘ygan edi: juda ko‘p ishlab, dam olishni unutish haqidagi hikoya — yashirincha kuchli tomon bo‘lgan zaiflik turi. Bu xavfsiz, silliq va butunlay unutiladigan javob bo‘lardi.
Years later, Javlon now interviews candidates himself, and he always asks the same question. He has noticed that the best answers share three features: the candidate takes real responsibility, explains specifically what they would do differently, and shows that they have actually changed their behaviour since. Blaming others, he says, is the fastest way to fail his interview.
Yillar o‘tib, Javlonning o‘zi endi nomzodlar bilan suhbat o‘tkazadi va doim o‘sha savolni beradi. U eng yaxshi javoblarda uchta umumiy xususiyat borligini payqagan: nomzod haqiqiy mas’uliyatni o‘z zimmasiga oladi, nimani boshqacha qilishini aniq tushuntiradi va o‘shandan beri xatti-harakatini haqiqatan o‘zgartirganini ko‘rsatadi. Uning aytishicha, boshqalarni ayblash — uning suhbatidan o‘ta olmaslikning eng tez yo‘li.
