Last Sunday, I helped my grandmother clean her cupboard. At the back, I found an old box. Inside, there were letters, a silver ring and many black-and-white photos.
O‘tgan yakshanba buvimga shkafini tozalashda yordam berdim. Orqa tomonda eski qutini topdim. Ichida xatlar, kumush uzuk va ko‘plab oq-qora suratlar bor edi.
One photo was very interesting. It showed a young woman on a bicycle in front of a big building. She had short hair and she was laughing. “Who is this?” I asked. Grandmother smiled. “That’s me,” she said. “I was nineteen.”
Bitta surat juda qiziqarli edi. Unda katta bino oldida velosipedda o‘tirgan yosh ayol tasvirlangan edi. Uning sochi kalta edi va kulayotgan edi. “Bu kim?” deb so‘radim. Buvim jilmaydi. “Bu men”, dedi u. “O‘n to‘qqiz yoshda edim.”
She told me that she studied at a university in Tashkent. She was the only girl in her class of engineers. Every day, she rode her bicycle to the university. People in the street looked at her, because women on bicycles were not common then.
U menga Toshkentdagi universitetda o‘qiganini aytdi. U muhandislar guruhidagi yagona qiz bo‘lgan. Har kuni universitetga velosipedda borardi. Ko‘chadagi odamlar unga qarashardi, chunki o‘sha paytda velosipeddagi ayollar kam uchrardi.
I looked at my grandmother. She is old now, and she walks slowly, but her eyes were laughing just like in the photo. I put the photo in a frame, and now it is on her wall.
Men buvimga qaradim. U endi keksa va sekin yuradi, lekin uning ko‘zlari xuddi suratdagidek kulib turardi. Suratni ramkaga solib qo‘ydim, endi u buvimning devorida osig‘liq.
