Last winter, there was a power cut in our whole street. It was seven o’clock in the evening, dark and very cold. Our heaters stopped, and the fridge went quiet.
O‘tgan qishda butun ko‘chamizda elektr o‘chdi. Kechki soat yetti edi, qorong‘i va juda sovuq. Isitgichlarimiz to‘xtadi, muzlatgich jim bo‘lib qoldi.
My father took some candles and we went outside. All our neighbours were in the street. Somebody made a fire, and an old man brought a big pot of tea.
Otam bir nechta sham olib, tashqariga chiqdik. Hamma qo‘shnilarimiz ko‘chada edi. Kimdir gulxan yoqdi, bir keksa kishi katta choynakda choy olib keldi.
We stood around the fire for three hours. I met people who lived on my street for years, but I never talked to them before. When the lights came back, everybody was a bit sad. Now we have a street party every summer.
Uch soat gulxan atrofida turdik. Yillar davomida ko‘chamda yashagan, lekin ilgari hech gaplashmagan odamlar bilan tanishdim. Chiroqlar qaytganda, hamma biroz xafa bo‘ldi. Endi har yozda ko‘cha bayrami o‘tkazamiz.
The children were the happiest. They ran around with torches and played hide-and-seek in the dark. One boy told us he had never seen so many stars before, because usually the streetlights are too bright.
Eng xursandi bolalar bo‘ldi. Ular chiroqlar bilan yugurib, qorong‘ida bekinmachoq o‘ynashdi. Bir bola ilgari hech qachon bunchalik ko‘p yulduz ko‘rmaganini aytdi, chunki odatda ko‘cha chiroqlari juda yorug‘ bo‘ladi.
At the first street party, the old man who brought the tea told us his story. He was a teacher for fifty years, and some of our parents were his students! Now people visit him every week and bring him food. He says he is not lonely anymore.
Birinchi ko‘cha bayramida choy olib kelgan keksa kishi bizga o‘z hikoyasini aytib berdi. U ellik yil o‘qituvchi bo‘lgan va ota-onalarimizdan ba’zilari uning o‘quvchilari bo‘lgan ekan! Endi odamlar uning oldiga har hafta kelib, ovqat olib kelishadi. U endi yolg‘iz emasligini aytadi.
