Namuna javob
A particularly noisy place I remember is a wedding hall in Tashkent where I attended my cousin’s wedding about a year ago. Uzbek weddings are famous for being loud, but this one was on another level. The hall was enormous, with around five hundred guests, and there was a live band with huge speakers placed right next to our table. The noise came from several sources at once: the music, which was played at full volume for hours; the master of ceremonies, who shouted announcements into a microphone; and hundreds of people trying to talk over all of it. At one point, there were also traditional karnay horns, which are incredibly loud brass instruments, announcing the arrival of the bride and groom. My feelings about the noise were quite mixed. On the one hand, it was part of the celebration, and the energy was fantastic — everyone was dancing, and it felt joyful. On the other hand, it was impossible to have a conversation with relatives I hadn’t seen for years, and by the end of the evening my ears were ringing. I remember stepping outside for some air and being amazed at how wonderful silence sounded. Now I always sit as far from the speakers as possible!

Is silence becoming a luxury?
Namuna javob
In a way, yes. Quiet neighbourhoods and soundproof flats are increasingly expensive, so peace and quiet are becoming something only wealthier people can afford.
Chuqur kuzatuv.
