Namuna javob
One thing I changed my mind about quite significantly is the value of vocational education — learning practical trades like plumbing, electrical work or carpentry. When I was at school, I absorbed the common belief in my community that university was the only respectable path, and that people who went into trades did so because they weren’t clever enough. I’m a bit ashamed to admit it, but I genuinely looked down on those jobs. What changed my mind was a combination of experiences. A few years ago, my parents renovated their house, and I spent a lot of time talking to the electrician, a man in his thirties called Jamshid. He was incredibly knowledgeable, ran his own business with five employees and earned considerably more than many of my university-educated friends. He also obviously loved his work. Around the same time, I read several articles about the shortage of skilled workers in many countries, including ours. Now I feel completely differently. I see skilled trades as essential, highly intelligent work that requires years of training, and I think our society undervalues them. In fact, I now encourage my younger cousins to consider vocational colleges seriously, rather than automatically choosing university.

Why do people find it hard to change their opinions?
Namuna javob
Partly pride — admitting you were wrong feels uncomfortable. People also tend to seek out information that confirms what they already believe, which psychologists call confirmation bias.
Psixologik termin.
-
Is changing your mind a sign of weakness or strength?
Namuna javob
I’d say strength, if it’s based on evidence. It shows intellectual honesty. Politicians, however, are often criticised for it, which discourages them from admitting mistakes.

How does social media affect people’s opinions?
Namuna javob
It can create echo chambers, where people only see views similar to their own. This makes opinions more extreme and changing your mind less likely.

Should schools teach critical thinking?
Namuna javob
Absolutely. Teaching students to evaluate evidence and consider different perspectives is essential in an age of misinformation.
