An Online Course

I’d like to talk about an online course in data analysis that I completed last year through a platform run by a well-known American university. I came across it when I was looking for ways to make myself more competitive at work; I’m in marketing, and I’d noticed that colleagues who could analyse data were getting the more interesting projects. The course lasted about three months and was self-paced, which was essential because I was working full-time. Each week there were short video lectures — usually ten to fifteen minutes each — followed by practical exercises using real data sets, and a quiz at the end. There was also an online forum where students from around the world could ask questions, and teaching assistants answered within a day or two. The final project involved analysing sales data for a fictional company and presenting recommendations. The course has been extremely useful for me. Practically, I can now build reports and spot trends in campaign data, which my manager has noticed. But it also changed the way I think; I’m much more likely to ask “what does the evidence say?” before making decisions. And it gave me confidence that I can learn complex skills on my own, which I didn’t believe before.
