Describe a time when you were late for something important.
You should say:
- what the event was
- why you were late
- what happened as a result
and explain how you felt about it.
Namuna javob
The time I was most embarrassingly late was for my best friend’s wedding about three years ago — and, worse still, I was supposed to be giving a speech. The ceremony was in a restaurant on the outskirts of Samarkand, about two hours’ drive from where I was staying. I’d planned to leave at three, which would have given me plenty of time. Unfortunately, just as I was about to leave, my car wouldn’t start; the battery was completely dead. I tried calling taxis, but because it was a Saturday evening in wedding season, nobody was available. In the end, a neighbour very kindly jumped-started the car, but by then I was an hour behind schedule. I drove as fast as I legally could, rehearsing my speech in the car. When I arrived, the meal had already started, and the master of ceremonies had moved my speech to the end of the evening, so in a sense it worked out. My friend just laughed and said he’d expected me to be late anyway. At the time, though, I felt awful — a combination of panic, guilt and frustration with myself. Looking back, the lesson I learned was to always have a backup plan for important events, and now I check my car the day before any long journey.

-
Is punctuality more important in some jobs than others?
Namuna javob
Definitely. In medicine, transport or broadcasting, lateness can have serious consequences. In creative jobs, flexibility is often accepted as long as the work gets done.
Kasbga qarab.
-
Why do attitudes to time differ between cultures?
Namuna javob
Some cultures see time as a fixed resource that shouldn’t be wasted, while others prioritise relationships over schedules. Neither is wrong; they simply reflect different values.
Madaniy tahlil.
-
Has technology made people more or less punctual?
Namuna javob
In some ways more, because of reminders and maps that predict traffic. But it’s also made people more casual about lateness, since it’s so easy to send a quick “running late” message.
Ikki tomon.
-
Should schools punish students for being late?
Namuna javob
There should be consequences, but they should be constructive rather than humiliating. Understanding why a student is late is often more effective than simply punishing them.
Nozik pozitsiya.
