Describe a tradition from your culture that you think is important to keep.
You should say:
- what the tradition is
- when it takes place
- who takes part
and explain why you think it should be preserved.
Namuna javob
A tradition I believe is vital to preserve is the mahalla system and, in particular, the practice of hashar — collective, voluntary community work. A mahalla is essentially a self-governing neighbourhood community, and hashar is when neighbours come together, unpaid, to help one family or improve shared spaces. It might be building a house for a newly married couple, repairing a road, planting trees or preparing for a wedding or funeral. It doesn’t follow a fixed calendar; it happens whenever there’s a need, though spring is a particularly common time for collective clean-ups and planting. Almost everyone takes part: men usually do the heavy construction work, women prepare enormous quantities of food, and children run errands, so it genuinely involves all generations. I think it should be preserved for several reasons. On a practical level, it provides a safety net that no government programme could fully replace; families who couldn’t afford labour still get houses built. But its deeper value is social. Hashar builds trust and a sense of mutual obligation — you help because you know you’ll be helped in turn. In rapidly modernising cities, where people increasingly live in apartment blocks and may not even know their neighbours’ names, this kind of social glue is eroding. I don’t think we should romanticise it — mahallas can also be quite conservative and intrusive at times — but the core principle of neighbours taking responsibility for one another seems to me more valuable than ever.

3-qism: Muhokama

-
Is it possible to preserve cultural identity in a globalised world?
Namuna javob
I think it’s possible, but it requires conscious effort rather than happening automatically. Cultures that survive tend to be those that adapt — reinterpreting traditions for modern life rather than freezing them in time.
Shartli imkoniyat.
-
What role does language play in cultural identity?
Namuna javob
A central one. Language carries concepts, humour and ways of seeing the world that don’t translate neatly. When a language declines, a whole worldview can be lost with it.
Chuqur tushuntirish.
-
Should immigrants adopt the culture of their new country?
Namuna javob
I think integration is healthier than assimilation. Learning the language and respecting the laws is reasonable to expect, but people shouldn’t have to abandon their heritage to belong.
Farqlash.
-
Are young people losing touch with their traditions?
Namuna javob
In some respects, yes, particularly in cities. But I also see many young people rediscovering traditions in new forms — through fashion, music and social media — which suggests a renewed interest rather than simple decline.
Murakkab trend.
