Describe a performance or exhibition that you found memorable.
You should say:
- what it was
- where and when you saw it
- who you went with
and explain why you found it memorable.
Namuna javob
A performance that has stayed with me is a production of “Hamlet” that I saw at the Ilkhom Theatre in Tashkent around three years ago. Ilkhom is an independent theatre with a reputation for bold, experimental work, and it was one of the first independent theatres in the Soviet Union. I went with an old university friend who had been raving about the director’s previous productions. The theatre is tiny — perhaps a hundred seats — and the stage was almost bare: just a few chairs, some fabric and dramatic lighting. The production was performed in Russian with Uzbek surtitles, and the director had made some radical choices. The ghost of Hamlet’s father was represented by a voice and a shadow rather than an actor, and several scenes were staged in near-darkness, which made the audience feel claustrophobic and complicit. What made it so memorable was the way it reinterpreted a play I thought I knew well. Having studied “Hamlet” at university, I’d always seen it as a story about indecision. This production, however, emphasised surveillance and paranoia — characters were constantly being watched and overheard — which gave it an unsettling contemporary relevance. The intimacy of the space also meant that at certain moments, the actors were barely a metre from me, and the intensity was almost overwhelming. I left feeling slightly shaken, and my friend and I talked about it until late that night. For me, that is precisely what good art should do: unsettle your assumptions and keep you thinking long after it’s over.

-
Should the government fund the arts, or should they rely on private money?
Namuna javob
I’d argue for a mixed model. Public funding protects art that may not be commercially viable but has cultural value, while private patronage and ticket sales encourage arts organisations to engage audiences. Relying solely on the market tends to favour safe, popular work.
Aralash model + asos.
-
Is art elitist?
Namuna javob
It can be perceived that way, particularly when venues feel intimidating or tickets are expensive. But that’s a problem of access, not of art itself, and it can be addressed through free events, education programmes and diverse programming.
Muammoni qayta ta’riflash.
-
Can art bring about social change?
Namuna javob
Historically, yes — novels, songs and films have shifted public attitudes on issues from slavery to civil rights. Art rarely changes laws directly, but it can change hearts, which often precedes political change.
Tarixiy dalil.
-
How has technology changed the way people experience art?
Namuna javob
It has democratised access enormously — you can tour major museums online or stream concerts. However, I suspect it has also shortened attention spans, making it harder to engage deeply with complex work.
Ijobiy + nozik xavf.
