Where do you usually get your news?
Namuna javob
From a handful of news apps I trust, deliberately chosen to represent different perspectives.
Ongli tanlov.
-
Do you trust the news you read online?
Namuna javob
Selectively. I tend to cross-check anything surprising before I believe it, let alone share it.
Ehtiyotkorlik.
-
Do you prefer local or international news?
Namuna javob
I follow both, though I worry that local journalism is disappearing, which leaves communities less informed.
Muammo.
-
Have you ever shared something that turned out to be false?
Namuna javob
Once, early on, and it was a valuable lesson in humility.
Halollik.

Describe a news story that had a strong impact on you.
You should say:
- what the story was
- how you heard about it
- what happened
and explain why it had such an impact on you.
Namuna javob
A news story that affected me deeply was the coverage of the Aral Sea’s decline, specifically a long-form investigative piece I read about five years ago in an international magazine, which combined satellite images, interviews and historical data. I came across it by chance through a friend who shared it, and I ended up reading it twice in one evening. The article traced how, in the space of a few decades, what had been the world’s fourth-largest lake shrank to a fraction of its size, after Soviet planners diverted the rivers that fed it to irrigate cotton fields. It described the collapse of the fishing industry in towns like Muynak, where rusting ships now sit in the desert, and the toxic dust storms that have contributed to severe health problems in Karakalpakstan. What struck me most, however, were the personal testimonies — a former fisherman describing the day he realised the sea wasn’t coming back, and a doctor talking about rates of respiratory illness among children. The story had such an impact on me for several reasons. Firstly, it was about my own country, yet I realised how little I genuinely understood about it; it had always been a textbook fact rather than a lived tragedy. Secondly, it demonstrated the power of good journalism — rigorous, patient and human. And finally, it was a sobering illustration of how short-term economic decisions can have catastrophic, irreversible consequences. It’s actually one of the reasons I became interested in environmental policy.

Who should be responsible for stopping the spread of false information?
Namuna javob
Responsibility is shared. Platforms have the greatest technical capacity to limit the spread, governments can set transparency standards, and individuals need the media literacy to question what they see. Relying on any single actor is unlikely to work.
Taqsimlangan mas’uliyat.
-
Is press freedom essential for a healthy society?
Namuna javob
I’d say it’s fundamental. Without an independent press, there’s little to hold governments and corporations accountable. That said, freedom carries responsibility, and journalists must uphold standards of accuracy.
Pozitsiya + mas’uliyat.
-
Has social media made people better or worse informed?
Namuna javob
Paradoxically, both. People are exposed to more information than ever, but algorithms reward emotional content, so they’re often more confident and less accurately informed.
Paradoks.
-
Will traditional newspapers disappear?
Namuna javob
Print editions will probably become niche, but the institutions themselves may survive in digital form, particularly those with strong brands and subscription models.
Farqlash.
